VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

#Media Players

I have to use a few, personally.

DivX player is the one I use for default. I think it's the best all-around video player.

Windows Media Player is the 2nd one I'll try, if DivX isn't working well with the video I'm playing.

VLC player is the last one I try. This will play almost everything. I don't like the way it looks, but it plays almost everything. I should probably start using it more. If you ever have a video that doesn't load, or plays choppy, or has some other kind of problem, once you play it on VLC you'll know if it's playable.

#Setting Your Default Player

There's two ways. The first one is easier, but the second way is more efficient.

The easy way is to right click the file, and find "Open With", then find "Choose Program". This opens up a dialog box with a list of programs. At the bottom, there's a checkbox to always use that program for this type of file. If the list doesn't contain the media player you want to use click "browse" and locate the program yourself. Make sure to check the checkbox so Windows will always use that media player.

There's multiple video formats (avi, wmv, mpg, asf, and more). The above instructions will only setup the default player for that particular file-type. If you setup avi's to play with a default player, your pc might still open up another media player to play wmv's, because they are different file types. For a more broader approach, use the following instructions.

Open the media player you want to use as the default player. Go to either tools, preferences, or options, depending on the player, and find the option to setup what file types the player will be the default player for. You might want to add what media player you want to use as default.

I think Windows Media Player is pretty good as it plays most formats of music and video and is widely used for streaming.

To make a player your 'default,' i think all you can do is associate the file format to the player you want. So for example, u go into Tools>>Options in Windows Media Player, then the option is within one of the tabs. Just check the box next to the format (e.g. MP3) and that should do it.

I think that winAmp is the best; www.winamp.com

To make your chosen player the default player for your system:
1) Open "My Computer"
2) On the menu, select "Tools", then "Folder Options"
3) In the window that opens, click on the "File Types" tab
4) In the list of file types, locate each type of media file (.mp3, .mpg, etc.) and do the following for each:
---- A) Click on the file type
---- B) Next to "Opens With...", click on "Change"
---- C) Locate your chosen media player in the list
---- D) Click on the Media Player to highlight it, then click "OK"
5) Close the "folder options" window and the "my computer" window

Now, whenever you open a media file, the chosen player will launch to play it.

Hope this helps!

in my opinion "windows media player classic" is the best solution it plays all types of videos. if u windows player downloaded from microsoft site that is the worst player ever built when ever u want to play anything in it. It simply gives a reply saying that i need to goto my site site to download the codes required for playing this type. so u better go for realplayer or if u can download klite codecs pack from net and use windows player

A while ago I would have said "Real Player" but I have since been told it is just a form of spyware, so now it would have to be Media Player, but get Quicktime as well if you can.
