Maybe something is waking you up?

The same thing used to happen to me and I found out it was neighbours front door shutting as he got home from a Night Shift every morning at about 5.00.

Had the same problem myself lastnight. Woke at 3.30am and it was well after 5am when i got back to sleep. Tried to watch TV and turned it off after about 10 mins. I go through phases of this. Im not stressed and don't drink tea or coffee in the evening. Am normally a bit annoyed with myself that I can't get back to sleep. So, when you wake up at that time again just think that there are loads more of us out there trying to get back to sleep.

Has this just started ort has it been going for sometime. Did you have a job where you would have do do something at 3.30 for an hour. I know it sound stupid, but I was in the Army for 24 years and only sleep for four hours a night. I can go to bed at 1030 and I am awake at 2.30, I go to bed at say 1 am and I am awake at 5 am. Before you start commenting its is only a thought.

It may be your blood sugar levels dip. I was having similar problems and it was suggested that I should eat two or three low glycaemic biscuits about half an hour before bedtime. I sleep much longer now.

Some of the points already given are good advice, you do not give enough information to work with, e.g. what you eat and drink. This plays an important role in your sleep patterns.

SJ,
I tend to aggree with previous replies about various causes of insomnia.
It can be a cause for more concern if you wake about 3am and then STAY AWAKE ALL NIGHT.
This will result in exhaustion and the symptom is properly called Secondary Insomnia.
Rather than rely on us well meaning bunch of Yahoo! Answerers, why don't you have a quick chat with your GP. If its worry about your sleeping pattern that's causing you to wake up talking to the Doctor will cure the worry and cure the sleep loss!!!!
Sweet Dreams SJ !!!

According to Chinese medicine 3-5am is the optimum times for the lungs to re-generate and strengthen them selves and fix any problems. If your waking up at this time, it maybe because you have a problem with your lungs. Do you wear a lot of white or grey, crave spicy and pungent foods and experianced any grief that you have not delt with. I would recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, but try and get them all in before 7pm or you'll just wake up needing the loo. This will flush out any toxins. Try relaxation brathing excercises before bed and when you wake. Also try taking Valerian tincture 30 drops in water before going to bed (available from health store, get the liquid works faster) hope this helps. If you want any advice mail me

You are slightly stressed, or excited about something.

Even if you go to bed late you still wake up.

You could cut down on coffe and tea, and maybe drink water or milk instead at night.

Do not concern yourself about when you go to bed try to forget about it. If you wake up, just think of the positive side, like heheheehe I can go back to sleep for a few hours before I have to get up.

Here's some helpful hints: exercise (not right before bed), no caffine late at night, or chocolate/sugar. Don't eat right before you go to bed, warm baths and stretching are good before bed. Turkey and milk is suppose to make you tired. Taking aspirin or benadryl is suppose to help. Relaxation tapes and finally, sex before you go to sleep. If all these things don't help, try to alleviate the stressors in your life that may be causing this, or whether it may be due to depression. Trazadone is prescribed a lot for people who have "middle of the night" awakenings. It is an anti-depressant taken at night that will help you sleep straight through. It has worked wonders for me. Good luck!

Do you take naps? are your sleeping habits (aside from the wakingup part) abnormal?

I would suggest no eating 4 hrs before sleep and before you go to sleep, a glass of warm milk. Try to sleep the same time everynight, sleep for 6 to 8 hrs and eat normally so you arent out of energy, which may lead to naps. It helps your body to set a consistant sleep schedule.

also, it may be your bed. I just recently got a 2inch thick memory foam (bday present) and holy cow, I sleep like a baby.

Have a calm hour before going to bed - maybe a soak in the bath
Exercise heavily prior to that so you go to bed tired
Don't drink much prior to bed time
No caffeine in the evening
Make sure all windows are shut, curtains heavily drawn; maybe use ear plugs?
Try a light herbal sedative?
And maybe going to bed later than normal.

In essence, you body has gotten into a habit that you need to try and break.

These may help

Otherwise, it will probably just go away.
