I never heard of meat substitutes until my sister's tenant introduced me to it. Her tenant was a Rasta. (Rasta's don't eat meat. Especially pork!) My sister was cooking some pork and asked the Rasta if he wanted some. he declined reminding her that he doesn't eat pork! She forgot and apologized. A few weeks later, my sister said she smelled some good stuff coming from the Rasta's apartment in her basement. Usually he cooked bland food because of all his dietary restrictions. But this was different. She said this smelled like meat! She opened the door to the basement and saw the Rasta sitting on the stairs eating PORK! She asked him why he was eating that! isn't it against his religion? He said no. It's alright. It's not meat! It's meat substitute! He was lying! It was Pork but that's how I found out meat substitute was something that actually existed!

Nothing beats a 1-1/2" rib-eye on the grill you can not make a substitute for this.
If it makes people feel good eating slabs of chemically flavoured so-ya let them.
I'll stick to the real thing the way it was meant to be.
