It means you're too cool to actually show up on time, but everybody expects it and forgives you for it, because you're so cool.

fashionably late means you're just a little bit late. Like 15 minutes or so to a party, to like half an hour. It means you don't get there early or right on time, and those who do are left to wonder about you for a little while. It's like building up "buzz" about yourself before you get to a party. Depending on what the event is, you could either be a cool cat for doing it, or a total ***. Don't be fashionably late to work or an interview.

It's always been considered uncooth to be the first person at a party, unless you are going to help the host/ess.
Fashionably late means that you are showing the host/ess and other guests at the parties that you are not desperate for something to do, that you show up early or exactly when the party begins.
Therefore, you show up at these parties a little late. This would be from about 15 minutes late to perhaps as much as an hour late.
Of course, if it's a dinner party then it wouldn't be wise to show up too late.

I agree with jonjon. The person that is known to be fashionably late is paris hilton.
paris is always late, and top of the list actors get upset when she is late. Directors and Producers forgive her for it because she is an heiress, shes famous, on the cool people hang out list, and she will get other parts. If that had been other regular actors, that would not be accepted.

You don't want to be the first one there. Sometimes its akward, so arrive 15 minutes late. (unless of course it is a movie or something you NEED to be on time for!) Also, being late might make it look like you have a life and were not waiting around for this event...sounds stupid yes, but its the truth.

If you arrive exactly on time you might be the first one there, and that can be awkward sometimes. If you arrive 15 minutes late, for instance, there will be people there already, so more conversations to join, and, plus, they can all see you walk in and admire your stunning outfit!

Well I think it means you don't want to look too eager. But if you ask me I think being the first one there shows the host that you are responsible and considerate of others. I can't stand it when people don't really care if their on time or not it drives crazy to be late.

Arriving 20 minutes or so after the invited time. (Don't try it for a business meeting.)

it's a polite way of saying 'you're late'... but you 'meant' to be... (not) you just forgot... or whatever, so instead of saying your sorry, you just say that you are fashionably late. It use to be the IN thing to say.
