I hope you and your mom will consider adopting a cat (or two!) from your local animal shelter. Look for playful, active ones.
p.s. Please don't get a cat if you are putting down poison, though!

I think that pretty much all cats catch mice.Every cat I have ever known have been good mousers ( and catch snakes,lizards,bugs,etc.).Most cats are good hunters and you should probably be prepared to have a few mice presented to you as a present from the cat.The question about 1 or 2 cats is completely up to the person. If you get 1 cat that is a kitten it is more likely to bond with your mom and if you get 2 then they might bond more with each other than any human around. The upside to 2 cats is that if your mom's out they won't be lonely for companionship. And can I please make a suggestion...check out your local animal shelter first. Some shelters are kill and some are no kill but they are homeless and need homes. And please spay or neuter if they are going to be going outdside so you don't have mutiple kitties running around.I hope this helps some!

Nearly all cats will serve your purpose, but Burmese cats are absolute killers... they'll have a go at anything. Incidentally, contrary to what one might think, it is _not_ necessary to starve a cat in order for it to be a good hunter of mice. A well fed cat is more likely to catch mice - almost as a form of sport. A hungry cat will catch a mouse, eat it, and go to sleep.
Perhaps two cats could work in shifts to give your Mum's house a 24 hour service!

all cats are good in catching mice cats are hunters if it moves a cat will chase it and catch it and i think that 2 would be good that way they will each have a chance to have fun. i have a big gargae and i had a mouse it took my cat 3 mins to catch and bring it to me and show me how much she loves me but then she took it a way to play with it(kill it)but dont let the cat eat it because you never know what that mouse has that it could give ot to yout cat

Most any cat will catch mice if they are hungry, although mine kill them just for fun and eat their heads off.
I would advise you to get two cats from the same litter as they will be friendly to each other and hunt together.

A hungry one.
Just don't go getting a lazy fat cat, they're useless. Pretty much any cat will catch mice...especially when they're young, around "teenager" age.

I only have cats I rescued from the animal shelter.
The best hunters are my 3 females.
They get mice and bring them to me as present LOL!

A hungry one, and two would be best. Make sure they are young and not over fed. You could also get a small dog, I have a Yorkie that goes after the gofers in my yard. I heard they were bread for going after rodents. Dashunds are pretty good for that as well.
