Basically it is a life long search. I think one does not have to have a specific "named" religion. You will form your philosophies by the input of everyday living, studying, eventually deciding how you wish to worship. Believe me every person in every religion questions.

Reading is a good start, but even better would be courses in the religion department at a nearby college or university. Many will allow residents to sit in for a small charge. Religions are all complicated and nuanced and it's very hard to get an accurate handle on one just from reading.

Experience is also important, so go to some services with different groups. If any touch you, ask if there's someone you can speak with about the religion. Most will be happy to welcome genuine seekers.

Recognise that this is a process and you don't need to make your life-choice right away. The Unitarians and Quakers can be good people to spend some time with while you're learning more about yourself, what you truly believe and what you most need from a religious community.

Welcome to the search.

Religion is not a smorgasbord where you pick and chose. You have to come to the realization that a religion that makes you totally feel good is probably a wrong religion because we are sinful people and a religion should test the conscience of people. We are always fighting against the goad. I can probably guess which things in the Catholic Church bother you...It's birth control and the priest issues (including why aren't women priests) I can tell you there are VERY good reasons for these. If a person doesn't understand something it doesn't necessarily make it wrong. Somethings our puny minds can't wrap around.. I also think it is the gay issue. Do not practice a gay lifestyle..that is sin just as much as a fat person should not practice gluttony. They may say they were born that way but, it is still wrong. A heavy cross but, wrong.

Find one that teaches everyone the Bible as a whole and not the sum of its parts. That treats children the same as adults, teaching them the whole Bible, and not just Bible Stories. One where everyone, men and women are ministers, and as such, they don't need to pay anyone to preach, as everyone can and does in front of the congregation. One where you as an individual doesn't get lost in the crowd, because the congregation never gets larger than 200 active members, and where every head of household in good standing is qualified to lead the new congregation.

Two very important things. A church where you can go from one congregation to another, across state lines, or international lines, but still find the same teachings.

And finally, when you ask them what day do they observe the Memorial on, they will tell you at sunset on Niacin 14. The only day Christ said to continue observing.

Invent your own spirituality. You will never find an organization with which you will agree 100% of the time, unless you turn off your brain. If you need to agree with everything in a religion to believe, you will be dissatisfied with every single established religion. So believe whatever you wish to believe.

Or, take the next step and realize that all religious beliefs are based on guesswork and wishful thinking and just live your life.

If the errors you see are because they are in conflict with what the Bible says, then that is good.

I would suggest that you visit some Pentecostal and Apostolic churches in your area and see if what they do lines up to the word of God. Every church is different (within the same denomination), so I can not guarantee what you will find, but these two denomination usually are very good (that is not to say that there are not other good denominations or individual churches, but those two will give you the best starting point).

If you are unhappy with the Catholic Church because it is teaching against things that you do even though it is a sin as described in the Bible, then you do not need a new church, you need a new hart (one that wants to follow Jesus and please Him).

Follow your heart and always follow the Bible. If it contradicts the Word of God, it's wrong...period. I have the same problem. I do not agree with all of the teachings of my church. I try to lovingly correct them and lead by example. Finding an compassionate and comfortable group to worship with, who abides solely on the Bible has been particularly difficult and I'm sure, being Catholic, will be even more difficult for you. Be prepared to be scolded and reprimanded. Be prepared for a great deal of isolation for a bit but you will get through it. Just don't stop reading, praying and seeking Him.

Good luck.

Try going with friends of different religions. That way you have a comfort zone while you are there. I don't neccessarily agree with everything in my religion either. I have comfort in knowing what I believe and going to a church where I feel God's presence. Find a church that you enjoy so you don't dread having to go!

There are many former Catholics in the Christian church that I attend, and they all have had the same experience you are having with uncertainty of the Catholic practices. If you truly believe in God, and believe in Jesus Christ the don't get stuck feeling that you owe it to the catholic church to be faithful, it is God and Jesus whom you should be faithful. It's OK to search out another church, as long as that church believes in the reality of Christ. I would suggest a First Christian church. Remember It's Not about Religion, It's about a relationship with God.

I'm Catholic, I don't believe in everything about my religion, but I don't go looking for some easy answer. I tried that once, went over to Wicca. Oh, it was fun for a while. Do what I want and not worry about God. But it didn't fulfill me, didn't touch my soul. I went back to church and got Confirmed. I still don't believe in every doctrine, but I'm spiritually happy.
