I have been invited to a friends beach house for the weekend. Would a bottle of wine be an approiate gift to take?

a gift is a great idea! I like to give gifts that will be useful, but also will leave an impression. Like, when the go to use it they will think of the great weekend John and Jane came up.

Wine is great - assuming they are drinkers. You don't want to show up with just wine if they don't partake in wine (and you are the one polishing off the bottle). A bottle of both red and white is a nice idea. You can team that up with a whimsical corkscrew "for the cottage". Something with a "beach" theme.

If they are not big drinkers, or don't drink wine, you might go for something that is good for the cottage use. A nice big serving dish is a great idea, and if you bring stuff with you - like cheese and crackers or chips and salsa you can whip it out onto the serving dish when you get there for cocktail hour.

Perhaps something whimsy and funny for the bathroom? fireplace? waterfront? birdfeeder + seed?

The trick for a cottage/beach house is to make sure your gift is accompanied by the thing(s) needed that it can be used the minute you get there. Don't rely on "oh I'm sure they have one", just pick it up anyway. If you are staying the weekend, and not contributing to food - a $50 gift or more is not un reasonable.

Oh - and do always BYOB.

Yes- wine is good. My only personal rule about Thank you and Hostess gifts is to bring something consumable, like wine, flowers, candels, nice bread or desserts, etc. As the hostess is always sucks getting stuck with little knick-knacks that you feel obligated to keep around because they were a present.

Wine is always good, and enough of it and she may just "accidently" break some of those little knick knack gifts.

Definitely! It's my default gift for family get-togethers. Maybe a loaf of French bread and a bottle of nice balsamic dipping sauce. (That's if you're traveling, it will keep while on the road.)
Or maybe a nice candle for nights on the patio?

If they drink wine, that would be lovely! How many people will be there? Maybe you should take two.

Absolutely. And/or you might offer to take them to dinner (pay for it) during your stay or buy/cook dinner for them.

Then follow up with a thank you note for their hospitality and generosity a week later.
