I worked in my mother-in-laws salon for about a year. They always had coffee and sometimes muffins and donuts. That was great. The only thing I would've done different is make sure the coffee is fresh! They would leave it on for hours at a time and that burns the coffee, making it taste awful. Not to mention they never cleaned out the coffee pot. They had somewhat of a homely atmosphere. Warm colors, the walls were painted a brick red on the bottom with a light brown wallpaper on top so it was a bit better looking than the stale white with more white looking salons that make me just want to go crazy with some crayons and markers!
Personality helps. But not one that's over the top. You want to be friendly but at the same time not pushy. I know that's a big thing when trying to sell the more expensive hair products, you have to portray this pushy attitude to sell them and convince the customer they NEED that product or else. But sometimes that scares the customers away. Be at ease with them, get on the same level. Also making sure your salon is very tidy and clean will help. Hire someone to clean if you don't have the time to do it yourself.
I was just thinking of this one...instead of having the ordinary cloth with metal bars for chairs, go for some couches and loveseats. Give your salon a certain look that's your own but one that doesn't scream,"look what I can do!" Make it comfortable. Soothing colors on the walls will help. Try some blues or greens, but not bright ones. Also make sure your product selection is well stocked. If you can't afford it, try smaller shelving so it looks well stocked. Tuck any cords out of the way so they don't get tripped over or distract the eye, and last but not least...ALWAYS make sure your pay station is neat and tidy! The salon I worked at had such a messy desk, it felt like the customers were always starring at it, trying to clean it up with their eyes.

make sure that your employees listen to what the customer wants, where i lIve all the hairdressers just do what they want to my hair without listening to a word ive said.
also make it a warm atmosphere always playing nice music and really friendly, if people feel comfortable with you they will come back again, its not always about the cut and colour for some women, especially shy or older women.
good luck for your new business

Be friendly. One of the worst turn offs is a snotty atmosphere. Warm and welcoming will bring the girls back, not cold and intimidating.

Hire only upbeat, really personable employees that you can trust. Make customer service your number one priority. Go that extra mile to please all of your customers, and they will want to come back. Make your decor relaxing, calming and inviting. Good luck!!
