My daughter had blood tests last week for coelliac disease. I phoned for the results today and they say that I have to speak to the doctor tomorrow. When I have had blood tests in the past if they were clear they have told me over the phone so am I too assume that she has it because I have to see the doctor. This is really worrying me as not knowing is worse than knowing.
Obviously the doctor is the only one to give me the results but all sorts of things are going through my head and if I can start to deal it now it would help me prepare better for tomorrow.

My daughter is 3 and my mum has coeliacs and the first step to diagnosis is a blood test.

I phoned up the results people as i was told to by the phlabotomist and they told me her blood count was normal and she was not anaemic but I would have to speak to my doc about the coeliac result. It is extremely hard not to worry - this is my 3 year old daughter whom i love more than anything.

Poor you, this is yet another terrible story of the NHS, why are they making you wait surely there is a doctor within the practise who can relay those results to you. For your own sanity ring them back and explain that you are now very worried and is there anybody you can speak to regarding those results. My doctors receptionist has been known to tell me similar and when I got there everything was fine, so try not to worry, but do ring them. Lots of luck to you and your daughter

If it is a blood test for anaemia or something, its probably a lot easier for the receptionist to interpret the handwriting and give the answer over the phone.
They probably did lots of different tests - not just coelliac - so its not straight forward for the receptionist to answer.
It could also be the case that they can give the patient the results direct and not the third party. (You said it was your blood tests that you got the results for - this time you are trying for your daughter).
Don't get stressed if you can help it. Its only a few hours til you can speak to the doctor. If still stressed, try ringing surgery and insisting on speaking to someone today.

the new HIPPA laws make it illegal to give out any personal medical information over the phone. This because anyone can call and say they are such and so and ask for information that they have no right to know. No way to truly verify by phone who you are talking to. In the past, information like lab results may have been given on the phone, but now it is illegal to do so. Why the office staff can't just be up front and tell you that is beyond me, but it is true. Stop wasting your time and energy worrying, worrying never changed or helped anything.

more than likely the nurses could not give information over the phone for legal reasons. In addition, when it concerns children they are more cautious with releasing info over the phone. They can not be sure who is on the other end. Also, only the doctor has the authority (and has to make the judgement) to release info over the phone. Try not to stress too much. Celiac disease, if that is what she has can be treated by diet modification. She just can not digest gluten so she would need a gluten free diet. hope this helps.

I have a problem with doctors telling me info too. There are new laws that go into effect almost everyday to protect peoples medical information. They like to be sure that the person who they are testing are the person who they are talking to. I asked and gave the doctor for promission to give my info to a nurse and she still will not allow that info to be past on. My doctor must tell me. (which I think is screwed up).But that is so the doctor and the hospital doesn't get sued. I am sure it is something simular.

As a lab tech..I can tell you that by law we are not allowed to give you the results of any tests, this is due to the new HIPPA regulations. If you called the ordering Dr's office, then the nurse or dr. should have been able to give you the answers. The secretary can not. Hope that helped!

it could be that the person that you phoned is not authorised to give medical details over the phone, and you they have told you to call back when there will be somone around who can tell you. someone who is not authorised would not be able to tell even if the results were clear. in this case, you have nothing to worry about. and if they are positive? you wont know until the next day anyway, and this is condition that can be diet controlled. so dont worry unless you have to.

Since coeliac disease is an hereditary mal absorption syndrome, I have no idea what blood test would diagnose it, unless she were given a test dose of a radioactive substance to test absorption.

its possible that the tests are back but the doctor hasn't looked at them yet..so the nurses aren't able to tell you the results until he signs off on it....possibly..
