Last week I saw a news report that said giving dogs certain kinds of sugar free candy can cause liver failure. My mother gives her dog Lifesavers Wintergreen (she has a hard time saying no to his begging, and he begs for everything), it doesn't say it's sugar free I was wondering if anyone knows if they contain that ingredient (I think it was spelled Xytol or something like that) that was in the news report. The bag doesn't have a complete ingredients list, and I can't find it anywhere on the web. Oh, and the reason I'm asking this is because her dog is sick and the vets think it's his liver (they're doing a biopsy today).

For everyone whose told me that I shouldn't give the candy to the dog, I haven't and I told my mother not to. But she's my mother so she doesn't exactly listen to me. I was asking what the ingredient was and if anyone knew if it was in that particular Lifesavers Candy. So everyone telling me not to give it to the dog isn't answering my question, and isn't being helpful.

Certain chemicals in sugar free candy can cause liver failure in dogs. It is not a good idea to give your dogs any type of candy. It will get them use to the sweet taste and as most drug have a sweet coating it may entice them to eat harmful medication.

Its Xylitol and it can be most harmful.

Dogs, should never be given candy at all. If your mother would like to give a sweet treat to her dog ..she should try the ice cream for dogs. My Chihuahuas love them. You can find them in the freezer section of Wal-mart. Also, have her look into local pets store, that have alternatives to candy for dogs also.

Its Xylitol and I don't think Lifesavers uses it, they are not sugar-free. Tell your mom to give him a carrot or bisquit, candy is not good for dogs, especially sugar-free with those nasty fake sugars.
