I think it depends where you live. If you live in the countryside you would need room for your chickens to forage and find food, and you would have to feed them too - grains, vegetables and scraps.
If you live in a town you might have to have cages for them, but chickens are easy to keep.
I make sure that I lock my 8 chickens up at night so that predators don't eat them.

My aunt has a farm with tons of chickens...just make a pen with 2x4's (wood) and chicken wire. These can be found at your local feed and farm supply store. Also very important, you need to dig up the ground where you plan to put the chicken coop at and lay sheet metal down at the location of the pen. (the exact dimensions of the pen) If you don't do this part first or at all..you will have a pen of dead chickens in no time. Weasels and other different kinds of little critters will dig a hole from outside of the coop and come up inside the coop. And WALLA!!! Buffet!!!!!!!!!!
