Desi chicken are "non farm" chickens and i believe are common in India. They have alot more flavor than your regular chicken and they are expensive because they are "rare" and quiet a delicacy. I don't know much about them, but a good friend had a chicken farm and I remember her telling me about them, years ago... I hope someone can explan it better.
Sorry.

Ok , here we go, let me explain the meaning of "desi" first....well desi is both a Urdu and a Hindi word ( Urdu spoken is Pakistan and Hindi spoken in India) both languages are pretty much similar ... Desi means "LOCAL" and PERDESI means from outside 'foreigner" bust can also be used for someone out of ones own city/ town.
When "desi" used with chicken it means that the chicken is not a “Broiler”. Broiler chicken are always in white color feathers their meat is soft and cook quickly but whereas Beautiful Desi chicken comes in different 3 / 4 different colors of feathers can be grey / maroon / black and are also in multicolor feathers.
Well their meat is slightly hard to cook..Needs more time in getting tender and the meat is much much tastier than produced Broilers....
Broiler chicken are born and grown up in cages whereas Desi chicken are born and brought up in open spaces..They run around and are happy unlike chicken in cages.
That is why many ppl including myself don’t eat chicken from cages as their frustration of being caged gets into their blood and then in their body meaning their meat and when human eats it...That un-easy feeling that frustration also gets into the human's body....
The meat from desi is healthier.
So, keeping and upbringing a desi chicken needs more open area and hard work plus more man hours whereas in cages it’s all an automatic thing. That is why desi is more expensive.. But it’s worthwhile spending bit more and get far better product for urself and ur family. Happy eating....

Desi chicken is the chicken that Lucille Ball served to his husband Ricky Ricardo, played by Desi Arnaz. It's more expensive just because of having to use the name "Desi."

"desi" chicken is surely expensive for-
- it is small, it requires more skill to sell it;
- it is a "free bird", means caught from others house, so risk of getting behind bars is to be covered,
- it keeps eating everything - which you otherwise could not imagine to be in your stomach, so packaging is made acceptable & yet "tasty";
i hope u have "real & Tasty" answers;

They are kept freerange so cost more to rear.
This also means they have low reproduction rates and high mortality rates, making them even more expensive to rear
