There are two types of bi-polar disorder. There is 1 and 2.The symptoms are the same, however, there are some difference in the way it is experienced.I will get into that in a moment.First, lets talk about the manic symptoms:feeling energetic, grandios, taking risks, feeling less desire for sleep or no sleep at all, sometimes irritability, can become violent, oversexed, feeling as though you can accomplish anything.Being manic can feel very good which makes it sometimes difficult to get the person to continue taking their meds. When manic you run the risk of over doing alcohol and drugs. Now for the depression. This is the worst feeling of the illness. You will feel worthless, feel as though your family and the world in general would be better w/o you,you feel hopeless, that nohing and no one could ever possibly help you.Feelings of guilt,EXTREME sadness, crying spells, thoughts of suicide VERY possibly attempts on your life.It is without a doubt THE worst feeling in the world. At that time you will not feel worthy of help, feel help is available for you,and probably will not accept any.The differences between 1 and 2 is this;with 1,these two phases will last each at LEAST 2 weeks, possibly more. With #2,which is the one I suffer from,it is called "rapid cycle".Meaning,I can go through these same symptoms sveral times a day for sveral days or for 1 day.It comes from no where and leaves just as quick as it came.I can experience and have, periods where I have had either of the depression or mania last for several days to a week.I have attempted suicide at least 10 times in the past 19 years.I am also a "self mutilater",I cut myself to stop emotional pain.At least I did.I am now on medication for my illness.I take 100mgs of Zoloft a day for depression and Trileptal twice a day for the mania.I still occasionally have bouts of brief depression and very mild mania, but it is under control. My husband also has bi-polar #1.He takes Paxil 2 times a day and Lithium 3 times a day.And he is a changed man.Lithium is THE best medication for this illness.I cannot take it for health reasons. It has been around since I believe the 50's..If it is you who needs this help,PLEASE get help ASAP.Don't wait until you are depressed or manic to do it because it is most difficult to find it within yourself at that time.I wish you the best.If you need more help or need someone to talk to e-mail me @ kalasmom3@yahoo.com...Name is Heather.

Personal experience, investigated, psychiatrist, therapy:

In a brief statement I can tell you the symptoms are...

Many!

I'll tell you what - It's the worst most interesting disease!

There is NO stability in being bi polar.... it's the sadness to the highest emotional roller coaster.
And you don't want to get on yet you can't get off of!

The main 2 symptoms are mania and depression. You may be familiar with depression as its the same as clinical depression. (sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, loss of joy in activities, suicidal thinking.) Mania is the exact opposite. (Elation, euphoria, "high" feelings, irritability, agitation, possible aggression, may go on magnificent spending sprees...) In the more severe mania, you may get delusions, feel your on top of the world, believe you have high power/can do anything, over-excited-ness...) Treatment with either a "mood-stabilizer" or low dose anti-psychotic can usually rid of the mania. Depressive symptoms are usually treated with anti-depressants. Mania may develop when taking an antidepressant so you must keep a close eye on your condition when you start or stop medication...

I hope this helps a little bit... good luck...
Andy...

Better do an Internet search.
Honestly lately when I look at mental illness questions I automatically presume that I have it just because i have felt that way or currently going through some symptoms.

Sometimes we want a name for just any kind of feeling. Twenty years ago they didn't know about mental illness or even anxiety and they did pretty well.

Search before you end up with a label, that's all it is a label.

counseling will help and talking to your loved ones.

Good luck

You get very very angry and agressive, then you become very subdued and sad.

I have an aunt who had this, but in addition to bipolar, she abused prescription drugs, street drugs and alcohol.

She had been abused as well. This made for a nightmare. She threw boiling water on her daughter, broke her son's nose, locked her kids in closets and also lock them out of the house in the winter time. She took 2 hours to put on makeup, was very very wealthy, and would buy 2 of the same outfit, then never wore either one.

She would go from being very loving and gentle to standing over you, yelling with her eyes popping out. I was visiting her when I had bronchitis, and she would come into my room and chain smoke.
If you think you might have it, go see someone soon.

Go on line and you will get more details. This is a serious condition that requires medication. Talk to a trained professional. Most people who have it are in denial in the beginning. Mood swings, uncontrolled spending, hyper sexual behaviour. Check it out and get help.
