I was on Paxil as a teen, so my experience is slightly skewed. I took it for severe depression and anxiety and it actually intensified the fears I held. Sadly I cannot give the drug any praise, I was never suicidal (only depressed) until they put me on Paxil.

I took paxil from 1998-2004 for anxiety disorder w/panic attacks. I started low at 10mg for 2 weeks and then upped it to 20mg where I remained for 6 yrs. It was great at controlling my anxiety and panic attacks. But recently when I tried it again it didn't help at all. The drawbacks were some weight gain in the beginning but was able to lose that, also my sex drive dropped down to zero, zilch, zip, nada! Couldn't even have an orgasm on the rare occasion I did have sex. But if you don't care about that then try it. You know, lexapro is suppose to cause less sexual side effects and recently Wellbutrin has been approved for anxiety(not sure about panic but you could ask for something like ativan when you do have a panic attack) and it doesn't usually have sexual side effects. With anti-depressants it's hit and miss, you have to work closely with your doctor to find what works for you. Some people need an anti-depressant along with an anti-anxiety med to control panic. You need to do whatever it takes to get your life back to normal so don't be afraid to speak up with your doctor. Good luck and take care of yourself!

Have been on paxil for 8 years now, for anxiety and depression. It has saved my life. I had a few side effects with dry mouth and that was about it. It took a few months for the full effect to help. I also have been up and down with the dosage, depending on how long different moods lasted. But I also went to group sessions to learn how to handle the panic attacks, THAT really helped.

I personally found it useless. Although, body chemistry and drug resistance make it process differently with everyone. Some people claim Paxil saved their life, and some (like I) believe it did nothing. I have been on about 13 different anti-depressants, mood stabilizers, and anti-anxiety medications, and have found Paxil unhelpful, but you are sure to have a different experience, everyone reacts differently to medications.

Personally, I've never taken paxil or paxil cr. but I can direct you to paxil's homepage if you'd like that...

Good luck...

My mom takes it for her depression and it seems to work. It also keeps her from having hot flashes from menopause as well. Which is a weird side effect, but works for her!

It didn't help me any, but it didn't hurt, either.

When it comes to anti-depressants, individual experiences vary widely. The best thing you can do it just try it out. If it doesn't work, try something else. If that doesn't work, try a different one.
