DO you know that the best way to confess to a priest is face to face? You can phone up and make an appointment or you can just go along at the times of confessions. If you prefer you can speak behind a screen. Priests have many years experience in how to help people who find it difficult to make their confession and they have heard every sin and its convolutions many times over. They are never shocked. The person who finds confession the most difficult and has committed the worst sins will usually make the better confession . All you need to do is to tell the priest that you don't know how to begin and what to say and he will gently guide you and help you. The very first step is to be really sorry for what you have done and to resolve never to do it again. Once you have made that start, the hard part is over. Go for it!! Your life will change and you will be free. God bless.x

First, do a thorough examination of conscience to review your life and see where you have not been loving to God or two your neighbor. Look at the relationships in your life. If they are not great, see where you have done something that caused harm or things you should have done to make things better. these will give you an insight on what your sins are. Let me know if you need a good examination of conscinece guide.
Pray an Act of Contrition and really think and meditate on what you are praying.
Go to the priest and teall him you have sinned and need to be forgiven. The priest will ask you questions. Answer them with all honesty and sincerety. There is no need to hold anything back. You will be embarrassed and ashamed, but that is ok. Nothing you tell the priest will ever be repeated to anyone. The priest is there to relieve you of any shame, embarrasment, or guilt. The priest admired people who have the guts to confess their sins.
Get everything off of your chest. Listen to what the priest has to say.
After you have received absolution, you will be given a pennance to do. the purpose of the pennance is to get you back on the right track towards God.
After you receive your final blessing, tell him thank you.

Depends on what and who you are confessing to, to a Priest it doesn't matter just blabber away! If to a friend, lover or boss it is not always advisable if they may not find out. If you are going to do it, then start with the worst part first and try to reconcile any differences once all the details are out in the open, be humble and expect the most spiteful response possible! Never use a past indiscretion as justification against the confessee.

Don't be fooled. Confessing to Jesus is impossible 'cos he's dead and gone. The only entity gifted with eternal life has to be God (assuming that he/she/it exists at all).
Since this hypothetical God gave man free-will, you have to accept the consequences of your decisions. No escaping. God may forgive you but you still have to be punished for the transgression so down you go.......
As for the confessional bit, since God is omnipotent, he already knows what you did, why you did it, whether you repent, and whether you just made a mistake or are truly evil.
Of course, if there isn't a God, then you may as well go out and commit some nice juicy sins. Just remember, somebody could commit the same sin against you. How would you like it? that's the true issue, in both religion and morality.
As said by Rabbi Hillel some 100 years before JC: That which is hateful to you, do not do unto others. All the rest (of the religion(s)) is commentary. Now go and study.

You didn't say, but I'm assuming you meant confession directly to God and not to a priest (Catholics have their own method of confession).
Tell God what you did first. While He already knows, confession is for you to openly admit to God that you've done wrong. Then you need to learn to forgive yourself and repent. Repent means to turn and go in the other direction. Now would be a good time to ask God to help you repent, to show you through His word how to correct this problem you are having.
Should you confess to anyone else? Yes, but (and this is a biggie) who you confess to is important. Sometimes it is not good to confess to the one you have wronged. You might be opening up wounds for that person that are best left closed, or perhaps the person has passed away or is no longer in contact with you. In those cases, go to a church counselor, or someone you know can keep a confidence and confess to them your sin. Choose someone that can hold you accountable.

The Bible says "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Also believe that "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried and rose the third day according to the Scriptures." What will be be saved from? Sin/self - trusting Jesus and Him alone. The knowing we have Eternal Life and a resurrected body like our Savior Jesus. I hope this is what you wanted, not sure.

What steps????
You just tell Jesus that you are a sinner and have fallen short of His Glory. That you come to Him for His forgivness and humbly thank Him. You ask Him to help you straighten out your walk so that you can grow strong in your faith in Him and be able to resists temptation for you not to repeat those sins. Followed by an AMEN.
You do not need a meadator in order to have your sins forgiven. You can speak dirrectly to Jesus, one on one. This is one of the benefits that came from Jesus laying down His life for us on the cross. No more middle man. Mortal man cannot forgive you for your sins, nor can they absolve you of them. Only Jesus can. Just one on one with Jesus. Praise the Lord!!!

Steps? Just confess to God/Jesus. Not complicated. Sorry? Tell Him you're sorry. Won't do it again? Tell him. Ask Him to forgive you. He forgives and forgets.

To Jesus? Simply tell Him what you did and ask forgiveness. Remember that repentence means 'turning away' from your old sins and making a commitment to start a new life in Christ.
