On a business letter it will go on the UPPER RIGHT HAND CORNER below your address (as MANY PEOPLE have ANSWERED CORRECTLY ALREADY).

On a personal note or letter, it can go on the UPPER LEFT, the UPPER RIGHT or the LOWER RIGHT corners! Just make sure you put that DATE ON YOUR LETTER! It makes it so convenient for someone reading that LETTER at a LATER time to establish the significance and the DATE which is of MAJOR IMPORTANCE!

at the very top of the letter, above the recevers name & address etc. whatever side you choose to put them.

then the Dear xdxxd,
then the Ref: xxxxxxx

then the body of the letter.

NOTE: for extra security where the dating of letters is legally important, you can also write the date below your signature when you actually SIGN it, for it to be considered approved and posted.

this is useful if the secretaries have all processed letters a day or two ago, but you want to show the date YOU actually get the letter and sign it, and expect it to be sent out.

On an informal hand-written letter, it goes in the upper right corner. On a formal business letter, it goes on the upper left side beneath the recipient's mailing address and above the part where you say "Dear (whomever)."

After you have typed your address in the top right hand corner leave a space of 2 lines then type the date. Better to use words not numbers
i.e Thursday 5th October 2006 not 05/10/06

On the top right hand side of the page, under your address.

Here is a good example of a business letter I found online:
