The CRB is the Criminal Records Bureau. There isn't really a specific purpose or reason that you should apply for a form however an example would be to work a teacher or anything with children.

Its the Criminal Records Bureau. If you are applying for a sensitive job, such as working with children, then your employer will do a CRB check, to see what convictions you have on your record. Even spent convictions will show up

Alice is spot on!...as quoted lol...(by the way Alice its welfare not welfair rights)
I was involved in the initial implementations of the Criminal Records Bureau.
It is available for more than employers to access, but any organisation or group of organisations have to be cleared to make applications for the information the bureau hold on individuals.
They also have to make sure that any information they gain positive or negative about an employee or potential employee, or volunteer etc, is kept secure and not in a general filing system with common access. They have to do this to comply with the Data Protection Act.
An individual can request a check on themselves, but not on just any old Joe in the street, equally, if as a for instance a family wanted to employ a childcarer within their home, the potential childcarer would have to apply for their own record check, the employer would not be able to do this.
I hope that's cleared it up....
In other words...read Alices' answer.

CRB runs a checking service for people wishing to work with young people and children - it does background checks on criminal records etc and has certain levels dependent on in which capacity you may be working with children.

It's a check carried out by the Criminal Records Bureau and is often required when people apply for jobs in sensitive areas such as mental health, schools, police etc. It's basically your history of criminal activity - convictions etc.
