The ticking will resonate through the wall and be amplified. You need some form of insulation between the clock and the wall, not forgetting the nail that it's hanging on too.

The clicking is caused by the mechanical movement of the mechanism, where one of the components is hitting against another (even these small pieces make a noise when they collide). In the extreme, you could find the area causing the problem and devise some type of bumper - difficult since it is likely quite a small impact area and the bumper would likely affect functionality.
Isolating the noise by lining the cabinet is worth a try (multiple layers of cloth, or maybe a magazine). It will be hard to absorb sounds coming through the face though.
You may have to trade this in on a different model. Digital clocks laking any type of mechanical motion are quiet, just watch for them being too bright of a display if this is the room you sleep in.

Try putting something on the back of the clock to absorb the sound of the ticking. I had exactly the same problem with a small beside clock and it was driving me daft. I now put it on a paperback book and the sound of the ticking is much quieter hardly audible at all.
Try some craft felt first off.

not really, you could put some polystyrene in any void in the back to stop the vibration.
The other alternative is to change the mechanism for a sweep one, these are based on continous synchronous motors rather than ones controlled by a governor.

You need to go to a watchmaker and get him to change the movement to a silent one, or you will be able to get one in a hobby shop or possibly Maplins. Get a radio controlled one if you can, no more re-setting!
