Whether a man automatically does this without being asked, for me, it tells of their whole character.
If a man has respect and consideration for others, even if the men out number the woman in a household, he'll still put it down.
As for training him, I don't know. I have used that as a mark of respect and men who've done that in my home when I've been dating them...that little lack of selfishness says a lot

Why should you want to, just be grateful that he lifted it in the first place.
However, you can adjust the seat so that it won't stay up, the hinges are on a cam type of arrangement, so loosen them and turn them, try 180 degrees at first and then fine tune as necessary. However, it will affect the lid also which is annoying when you are sitting down. Another disadvantage is that he will need to hold the seat up whilst peeing, thus possibly losing so aim control.
You could always dispense with the lid I suppose.
If he can be bothered to lift it, why cant you be bothered to lower it?
I suggest you seek some advice from a "trick cyclist" maybe they can cure you of your peculiar hang up.
Maybe then you can get a life!

I've been married for 20 years, so this used to be quite the argument between us! Purchase one of those thick, heavy toilet seat lid covers--the ones that are sort of like a bath mat? The thicker the better! It add weight to the lid, so it has to be held up while the guys go. The lid will automatically drop down after.
Men really are trainable. :)

Why is this such a big issue, I am amazed that this trivial matter could cause marriage break-ups. Who gives a damn whether it up or down? If it's up lower it, if it's down raise it, just how much energy is required to raise/ lower the seat? Are women so fragile that the energy needed to lower the seat could cause them harm?
Get over it, the energy required to lower/raise a toilet seat is so small it can't be measured, don't make such a big issue out of something so trivial!

you explain to him that the toilet works the opposite to your legs. If it is left up or "open" your legs do the opposite and stay closed.. if however it is closed then the opposite occurs to your legs.
hey we have to get silly here, what kind of moron doesnt know how to put down a toilet seat
