Depends on the type of worm your dog has. If it is small and looks like a grain of rice, then the dog got it from a flea infestation in it's fur. The dogs will chew to try and kill the fleas but will ingest the fleas and therefore the larva will become worms in the dogs intestines. If you are told the dog has heart worms these are caused by the larva of mosquito's. Any other types of worms come from contaminated water, eating spoiled food from garbage cans and also can come form contaminated soil. Check out this site for more info.

The most common worm is the tapeworm. That is from when the dogs are infested with fleas and they bite one and swallow it. The flea then will lay eggs in the dogs tummy . That is 90% of the worms that dogs get and easy to get.
Heartworms are from mosquito bites and they will actually live in the heart. The only way to get tested for them kind of worms is through a blood draw I believe and it will cause the dog to die if its not treated . Also it can be passed from the nursing mother to the pup
Hope this helps these are the two most common worms in dogs

There are many ways dogs can get worms. Heartworms are usually transmitted by misquitos. Round and hook worms are usually picked up by the dog eating something. Infected poo of another dog, grass, sticks, and anything that is infested with them. Heartworms need a vet to treat them. Other types just need a good worming med.

Dogs usually get whipworms from eating eggs that other dogs have shed. Dogs usually get tapeworms when they eat a flea that ate a tapeworm egg.

By eating something on the ground, or sniffing another dog's mess, because sometimes they stick their nose in it too much, and it might have some eggs in it. Also, by licking other dogs bums.

Just by licking themselves and other things.
If you check your dishcloth on your kitchen sink, it is probably riddled with tapeworm eggs as they can become airborne
