This was my exact situation when I woke up yesterday morning! Some refelexology on your left hand will really help- it did for me.
The pressure point is directly under your pinky finger on the top crease of your palm. Put your right thumb on that spot, with your right forefinger on the back of your left hand. You'll have to massage it with some pressure, and you will feel that it is sore- because it correlates to your neck/back pain. After a couple of minutes, it should relieve a lot of the tension!
It worked for me, Good Luck!

It sounds like a combination of neck strain and chill, I get it sometimes when I have to sleep on the floor (don't ask).
If you normally sleep on your left side, you probably need an extra pillow. If you normally sleep on your right side (or back), you could probably do with losing a pillow, or using a thinner one.
Also try wearing a polo neck T-shirt instead of jim-jams as this will stop any draught attacking your neck whilst you are asleep.

I also think it is due to a cervical disc problem, since the nerves run out of your spine and down you back and arms, alot of times if you irritate the nerves you will feel pain in your neck. Try stretching and strengthening exercises for your neck. You can find some on the internet

I have the same problem. I don't know the answer, but I know what makes it feel better. Get yourself one of those neck pillows that you can warm in the microwave. As you warm up that muscle that is in spasm in the back of your neck, you will be able to turn your head much more easily. Good luck.

you are either doing 2 things wrong...
either you are sleeping on your stomach, which since you have to obviously tilt you head to sleep on your stomach that can cause cramps...
if this is the case, get a body pillow you can lay on so you will atleast be at a 45 degree angle...
if this isnt the case, you are prolly sleeping on your pillow wrong... it is best to get alittle pillow the you can have on your neck but you head will still be laying on the matress, if you dont have the kind of pillow, get a small kind of flat one and fold it... so then where it folds you can put that under your neck and your head will be on the flatter part.

invest in a good pillow that shapes itself to the contours of your head while you sleep. Also is should provide support to your neck and back.
The pillows with the magnetic fields in them are also good.

Try going to a chiropractor. They can take x-rays if necessary, or re-align any out of place discs, etc. If taking a warm shower after waking up helps, it is probably just a muscle cramp.

Me too but on the left hand side of my neck. I'm hoping I can clear it up with stretching and exercise but I've had it for years now.
