I know there's a while before Christmas but I though I'd better start looking for breeders now.

Dogs do not make good gifts- for any occasion. I understand that she WANTS one, but she needs to be knee deep involved in finding the right dog for her. You may have good intentions- and it seems you do, but you are not the best judge of what dog is right for HER.
Instead of getting her an actual dog, if you know what size f dog she is preferring- get her some items for the dog- bed, crate, bowls, leash, collar, treats, etc. Then help her find a good breeder, go to the shelter with her and spend time looking for the right dog- it really isn't a decision you can rush into or it's not an impulse buy.
I know you may think this sounds snooty, it is not meant that way.

You clearly want to do what's right, but...

Rottymom02 and ARMYWIFE have already said it. Dogs do not make good gifts.

What happens if the dog is not right for her? She is stuck with a dog that she will have all sorts of trouble with, not fair on your mother-in-law or the dog. She needs to be involved with selecting the dog at EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

Perhaps you could go to the library and get a few books out on the various different breeds, what their needs are (they can and do vary A LOT) etc. Go through them with her, so she can decide for herself. She is the one that will have to live with the dog, it's only right that she is the one who chooses.

Xmas is also a bad time to bring in a dog. Dogs need time to settle in their new home, and Xmas is not a normal time of year. The suggestion to buy dog bowls, beds etc (if, of course you know roughly the size of dog you are after) was a good one, then go along with her in the new year to choose her puppy.

Maybe give her a "cheque" for Xmas saying that you'll pay for her dog in the New Year. The impact of the gift will still be there, but she'll be more likely to end up with the right dog if it's chosen by HER at the RIGHT TIME.

Dogs are for life not just for Xmas...sorry,...had to get that one in!! How old is your mother in law? How active is she? Why not try a dogs home and see what there is? If you prefer a dog from a breeder...why not try the snootiest breed of dog...the queen has em so why not your mother in law..corgi!! Papillons, chihuahauas and pekinese? I think you need to consider what she can cope with more than how it looks tho.

go around the dogs homes or rescue centres. Sounds like a lap dog would suit her best.

dogs dont make good christmas gifts. just get her a good present and if she still wants a dog then she can go and get one. if nothing else you can help her pay for it. but if you buy her a dog for christmas and she doesnt like it then you will be stuck w/a dog you may not like either.

Get a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, ours is a fussy eater and ignores me unless he wants his belly rubbing or feeding, playing fetch is a non starter if I throw the ball I have to get it myself.

Poodles are good house dogs, easy to keep and affectionate.

How about a bulldog? They don't exactly have the nicest faces, plus they drool a lot. She can spend her time cleaning up after the dog drools on everything. LOL
