Consult your child's doctor. When you say that he does not listen, do you mean that he does not follow any directions you give him? Can he not hear or is he just defiant?

My 3 year old does not talk clearly. After a hearing test, I found that he could not hear out of one ear. Also, he displays oppositional defiant characteristics. The speech pathologist says that he can say all the speech sounds just fine. My son isn't speaking or obeying because it is a control issue. Right now we are working on modeling speech for him. We have taken all pressure off him to speak because that just makes him worse. We spend time reading to him and talking with him as we play together to teach him to speak. Hopefully these things will start working.

As I said before, the best thing to do would be to take your child to the doctor and talk to him/her about the problem. The doctor can give you suggestions about what to do and where to go for help like to the health department or to the public school or to a private speech pathologist.

Consult a doctor, is there any reason to believe that his hearing maybe impaired? Because I know while some children are slow to learn to talk, your child is old enough to show signs that he understands what you say (mine is only a year and a half and already knows, give that to mommy, or put that back). If hearing is not a problem (he reacts to sudden loud noises) then it could be a different medical/developmental problem. I suggest you consult a doctor right away, because if it IS hearing then you will need to learn sign language right away so you can start communicating with your son on a level he understands (using sign language also CAN work on children with other developmental problems). If your son shows absolutely NO signs that he understands words then there is a problem that needs to be addressed by a professional, at three this can really slow down other areas of development, so the faster you can find out what the problem is the better off he'll be in the long run.

What i would advice you some children speak late may be 2 years late so don't worry Give him Speech Tharaphy,i also use to give my son same traning and he improved.
Join him in the Play Group so he will try to learn some
slowly you will see some difference
Does he respone to the sound?
if yes then there is not need to worry

I know how you feel my son is going on 5 years old and still a little delay in speaking, I agree first talk to your doctor and have the doctor do the test okay and don't worry everything will work out just fine.
Don't worry your mind about what could be wrong, you have a blessing from God your child.

If your 3 year old has not started speaking yet,,,he should be thoroughly checked by a Doctor! He may have a hearing problem, learning disability or some other developmental delay that is prohibing him to speak or listen. Having him checked out can ensure nothing is wrong or discover something is wrong in time to correct it. In any case, it won't hurt!

I'm EXPERIENCED in this area.

In short, do the following: Get his hearing checked, even if he responds at times, there may be some frequencies that he cant hear.
Once that is ruled out, get the shape of his mouth checked by a doctor to make sure he doesn't have a short tongue, and rule out the roof of his mouth being to deep.
While doing these things have him put on a waiting list for speech therapy as my son was on the list for over 12months!!!
Apart from these things, you need alot of patience and speak to him slowly and clearly and maintain eye contact. Encourage him to make animal sounds as well and read to him daily. Hope this helps...

I just want to say That all children learn at their own pace. Though I do believe you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible to rule out a learning disability, deafness ( which you would most likely already know of). I have a 30 month old boy who does talk very much and has alot of words but, they are extremely hard for people to understand. There are only a few real good words he says. But i also have a cousin who is 31 months old who hardly ever talks but he knows what your telling him to do and he chooses what to listen to or if he wants to reply to you. Maybe your child just isn't ready some kids wait till older to do things we expect they should be doing. But please do talk to your child's doctor. It may be nothing but it may be something. Hope all works out for your family.

There is a problem. If you mean he does not listen to what you tell him to do then you have to figure out if he is hearing and understanding what you are telling him to do.However a child with a hearing problem will still talk but not clear.Im surprised his pediatrician has not refered him to a specialist by now.Might want change his doctor and get all of this checked into.

ohhh. poor guy. does he have older siblings? My little brother also had trouble talking at that age, because me and sister always did everything for him, all he had to do was point at what he wanted and we got it for him. I dont know what state you live in but in Wisconsin, we have something called birth to three program that screens young kids for hearing/speech problems, you should see if your community has something like that. They often have play groups, etc. available just in case it may be a socialization problem. Is your little guy really shy or anything? I would definitely call your local grade school or school district to find out about the speech hearing screenings in your area. Good luck!

Make your Doctor aware of this he should be already. Not talking and not listening at the age of 3 is not normal. They should have a vocabulary of at least 500 words by this age.
