I don't think they should be but their should be verys strict regulations on owning one. You should be required to have appropriate fencing. You should be required to take a class on owning a 'dangerous' dog. You should have to pay alot extra for licensing that would go towards a good cause like spaying/neutering shelter animals. You should be visited several times a year by a animal behavior specialist to make sure your pitbull is not dangerous. You should be allowed only one biting incident before removing the dog from your household. Don't get mad at me if you own a pitbull! My friend's daughter was savagely attacked by one and had to have numerous surgeries. I know there are some nice pits out there. However, it is the most dangerous dog to own. I think too many people own them to just be macho rather than truly wanting a loving companion which is what dog ownership should be about. In this day and age, we don't need security dogs with all the modern security.

In Toronto where I live, pit bulls are licensed somewhat as you claim. You would not believe the amount of press the owners get claiming that there are no bad pit bulls, just bad owners.

I agree that bad owners are the main cause of pit bull attacks. But if a pit bull itself wasn't inherently dangerous, there would not be the severity associated with the aftermath.

The pit bull breed was bred to FIGHT in a PIT. This means that it has hardwiring that perceives all other animals as opponents that it needs to master by fighting. Woe be to the innocent pedestrian when that pit bull decides that he is just another animal to be mastered. And unfortunately, because children are closer to the pit bull's size, they are more likely to be attacked.

I agree that all pit bull owners need to be duly trained and licensed before owning one. I also think that pit bull crosses should come under the same legislations. And I think that pit bull owners should also need to carry a specialized insurance policy that would pay out on damages that pit bulls cause. And if the owner has to pay through the nose for this, then so much the better. Anything to get these dangerous animals out of people's homes and off the street is okay by me.

I do not think that the APBT should be illegal. i truely love this breed..they are wonderful dogs. However i do think that only certain people should own them..and that there should be certain laws to it.
1. the person must have background checks..any felonies, animal abuse, animal fighting and drug convictions automatically disqualifies them.
2. the person must own their own home w/a strong fence.
3. the person must take their APBT to puppy training classes..and then adult obedience school..for training and socialization.
4. the dogs will be spayed/neutered.
5. the person must be willing to accept unannounced home visits from animal control and the police at any time.
6. they must have a liscence to have the animal.
7. any aggressive problems and the dog is to be put down.
8. any violation of these rules terminates the owners right to own this breed ever.

these are good dogs..but in the wrong hands can be a very dangerous dog. their jaw power is so strong when they bite it is very hard to get them off of their victim. and their muscle mass is so large..they may be a medium dog..but have the strength of a dog 3x their size. they are known to have dog aggression....this is in the breeding and history of the APBT and that will never change. but they were never know to have human aggression and in the begining of the breed any APBT to show human aggression was not allowed to breed and usaually killed.
APBT's can be the most loving dogs in the world..but only in the right home and family enviornment.

Look, I have two pitbulls and a pomeranian. My boyfriend went to JAIL because of the damn pomeranian biting a 3 year old boy. My two pits have never bitten anyone or anything except their food and toys. Why should we have laws regulating pitbulls? I've had dogs that are smaller than my foot bite me more than my 90 lbs pitbulls.

Also, it is not the most dangerous dog to own. In a study done in 2005, they rated the top 100 dogs likely to bite and pitbulls came in 8th... from the bottom. Cocker Spaniels and Labs came in the top.

There are lots of misconceptions here as well as in our communities where breed specific legislation is making dog ownership risky.

First of all, the origins of the pit bull are in butcher shops where their job was to bite the nose of the bull to hold it while the butcher killed the animal. They were originally intended as family dogs with a strong work ethic and tenacity.

However the skills the pitbull needed to help butchers translated well to the fight ring and that is where the problem arises. Many many pitbulls are actually very good with people, but are horribly dog aggressive. The problems come when poor quality dogs are bred by unethical breeders who focus on the scary qualities rather than the even temper that was originally inherent in the breed.

I live near a major army base in NC, and we are simply inundated with macho-types who want a big scary-looking dog for a fashion statement. (It makes me laugh because if they have to yank around a slavering dog to feel manly, it actually makes them look LESS tough. Even sissy-ish)

The problem with pitbulls is the people. Most people in my area do not focus on breeding dogs with sound minds as well as sound bodies. They actively WANT the aggressive nasty dogs. This should be criminal.

On the other hand, if we ban pit bulls, those stupid people will then buy and reproduce other breeds until they are mean and nasty and crazy as well. Then we'll have to ban dobermans and rottweilers and boxers and German shepherds and akitas and English bull dogs and airedales and on and on. Breed specific legislation doesn't work for just this reason. And besides it is unenforceable with something like pitbulls, which is essentially a mixed breed dog with no AKC standing. The owner just has to claim it is a mixed breed dog and it gets around the legislation.

My sister's rescued chihuahua has a pretty good attitude towards strangers (we're working on that!). Does that mean she should be regulated?

I don't have a solution, but regulating the breed is not it.

I do think that most people who want a pitbull should not be allowed to have one. They are more dog than most people are prepared for. That said, it is not the government's business to regulate that.

It kills me to say it, but pitbulls have a right to live too.

Pitt bulls are a great example of what happens when any single breed is over bred, without attention being paid to the traits it should be bred for and for people who only want it as a "vanity" dog. This breed was bred to be a fighting dog originally. People locked onto that aspect and interbred like mad, bringing that one trait into such dominance the whole breed has suffered. At this point, pitt bulls are illegal in many area and even in places it is legal to own one, most HOA and housing groups have strict rules about their presence in the area.

I have met some truely sweet pit bulls. Thaey are loving intelligent dogs who are extremely loyal to thier people and protective of thier territory. It takes a strong owner to raise, train and socialize these dogs as well as being able to handle them physically because these dogs are strong.

Unfortunately, there are too few good owners and too many who just want a mean dog. Until there is better control over the breeding of these dogs, I don't think we will see any changes in the rules in the near future.

I think being an irresponsible dog owner should be illegal! It doesn't matter what the breed, if the owner raises it to be bad it will be bad. We already have those restrictions in the town I live in and the breed is banned but some owners who have done all of the above plus not allowing the dog to be outside without being with an adult 21 or older and on a leash are allowed to have them. The dog also has to be fixed.

I have a pit/black chow mix and hes a big lover boy. And that is two really bad tempered dogs. And i have three little neices who he just loves to romp around and play with. One is 5 and the other two are 12. I have never had a problem with any pits that ive see. The problem these days are that the PEOPLE RAISE THEIR DOGS UP TO BE MEAN....... Not the dogs raising themselves up to be that way. Lets put it this way..... If some one was to hit you and beat you all the time what would you do. turn mean and do something about it.. Now what if some one loved you and took care of you all the time you would be nice and loving right. well its all the dogs owners fault. if you dont know how to properly raise a dog than dont waste your time trying. I have a boxer that i raise to protect me and she wouldnt hurt a fly unless some one was trying to attack me. i love my boxer but saddly she is getting old. she has what i belive is a tumor on her back left hip and it cause her whole leg to swell up. ive called around for amputation but i would have to take her to pittsburgh or akron for the surgery... oxoxo maxine i luv u baby girl and ill miss you when your gone.... youve been the best oxoxoxo

In my opinion, I don't think it should be illegal to own the type of breed that you desire... Sure pit bulls are known for their lethal disposition but that has been bred into them through physical abuse and severe dog fighting. Through experience, I have learned that everyone has a different perspective on the breed's aggression issue. I think it has to do with history. Perhaps it depends on the owner to erase the negative behavior patterns of the pit bull's ancestors and to gradually breed out the aggression. I personally know some very affectionate pit bulls who have never once attacked or have displayed aggressive behavior. I think the owner of a pit bull should be responsible and willing to dedicate prolonged affection and time to their companion. They should not be neglectful and should socialize their dog at a very young age so it can develop an optimistic relationship with people. An owner needs to be able to build a foundation of trust with the dog so it can grow healthy both psychologically and physically.

Yes I totally agree with you way too many ppl own these type of dogs . These dogs are not something to play with. Have you ever seen the dog whisperer? Ceasar Milan has 2 pit bulls and he stated that it takes a very strong minded and strong willed person to own and take care of these types of dogs. They need to be trained properly of what is acceptable behavior and what is not acceptable . I like the breed but i think you should know how to handle a dog like that before you get one and definately carry extra insurance in case the dog gets nasty with someone. I think these dogs should have to wear a muzzle when they are outside. It keeps them honest and they cannot hurt anybody with that muzzle on.

F**** NO!!!!! They are the most loyal dogs i have ever met. The only time they dangerous is when they have been raised by an IDIOT and he or she should be the one outlawed. Any dog could be dangerous it just depends on how you raise them. I myself have 2 pits and they are nicer than my Boston Terrier. In fact he, Cowboy, will take a toy rope and play tug-o-war with both of them at the same time. In some cases the pits do have to be put because they have bitten someone but the Breed itself should NOT be outlawed. I also think the owners who have trained their pits to fight and such should have to pay for their dogs mistake if the dog hurt someone and was put to sleep then the owner should be put in jail for a loooong time
