About the whole intelligent part i think it partly depends on how you Dog is and what you teach him/her although the list is a good referance too. but we have a labrador and hes not really very intelligent at all (no offense to my dog)....like i said it depends on the dog. also even though this breed wasnt on the list the norwich terrier is a fairly intelligent Dog and hes frindly with children im not sure he will be good with a border collie but they are suitable with most other Dogs aand sumtimes cats. Australian terriers are also intelligent and outgoing but they dont do as well with small children australian terriers are also good watch Dogs though...
There are sooo many out there! But I did a research:
Top dogs! The brightest canine breeds!
*1* Border collie
*2* Poodle
*3* German shepherd
*4* Golden retriever
*5* Doberman pinscher
*6* Shetland sheepdog
*7* Labrador retriever
*8* Papillon
*9* Rottweiler
*10* Australian cattle Dog

I know that some dog breeds are considered smarter than others, but I am sure it varies within the breeds as well. The smartest dog I have ever known is my Doodle (dachshund/poodle mix). He is an evil genius. If I didn't know better I would think he is part cat. He was an "only" dog for a year, and when we got a second dog he would do things and try to "frame" the second dog. He also would follow me into a room and push the door closed to keep the other dog out, or would lead the other dog to the back door and ring the bell and run away so I would think that the other dog wanted to go outside (he has a little bell on the doorknob that he rings when he wants to go out). He recognizes a large vocabulary of words and will run to get his leash if anyone says the words "walk", "leash", "car" or "bye bye". He is scary smart.

The standard poodle is said to be the smartest dog and highly trainable. I know it sounds weird, but I've been a dog groomer for 10 yrs. and I've seen outstanding specimens.

Border Collies and Jack Russells are very intelligent, I think any dog can be smart, it just depends on how much their owner works with them. The more time you spend with your dog the more he will learn. I talk to my dog starting the day we got her, and she recognizes more words b/c she hears them alot.

Collie. They are the first choice of Shepherds, because they understand and respond to so many commands.

Pugs! At least as far as food is concerned. They are very clever at learning how a person hides things, can find them out, etc.
