Unfortunately, NYC hotels are very expensive. The "boutique" hotels are even pricier - around $700+ per night. $300-$400 per night in NYC is considered very reasonable. The hotel rates go up a lot during December and the holiday season, so book early.
I would suggest the Clarion on Park Avenue, it's one block from the subway. Book early. It's a small hotel but relatively affordable, clean and comfortable. As an alternative, you can stay at the Hyatt in Jersey City - it's only 2 stops on the PATH train to lower Manhattan. Rates are more reasonable - and you can certainly get 2 big rooms so that there can be up to 4 people in a room.

I've heard so many mixed reports from the Days Inn hotel. I stayed there last December and the room was perfect. Was cheap, clean and the staff were friendly. It was quite a way out from main NY but a jump on the subway and within 5 mins you were at the heart of the city. The one I stayed in was on 94th and Broadway. It's no Hilton but with being out and about so much, all I needed really was a bed and shower. The hotel provided both and I thought it was fab! I heard people complaining about their rooms as they're renovating, or at least they were. The people were soon moved and any problems were solved. Hope this helps

First off, "great hotel", "really cool hotel" and "isn't too expensive" aren't phrases that go together in any city, but especially not in NYC. For the best value for your money and a room that's a decent size, try the Sheraton Manhattan or the Soho Grand.
Don't be cheap. It's your 30th birthday. Splurge and pay the extra $50 a night and stay somewhere convenient and clean.

Firstly I agree with "Iknowsomestuff" regarding the words "cool" "not expensive" etc really doesn't go in NYC. But I have stayed at the Hotel Thirty Thirty which is midtown but close to 5th Avenue, Empire State Building etc. It was a basic but good hotel. People even live there and you can tell the difference between the residents apartments and the guests rooms by the doors. It was cheap and cheerful but we liked it and face it when your in New York how much time are you going to spend in your hotel room? I got a good deal with hotelpronto link below!

Try the Grand Union Hotel. Not too expensive for the location. It's just 2 blocks from the Empire State Building.

Try the Washington Square hotel in the Village. Come out of the door and turn left and you're at the start of 5th ave. Not overly expensive, pretty hip in a 50's Village kind of way and right on one of the city's parks.

You may want to stay in a hotel that time of the year. Staying at a hotel can become quite cold.
