I am going to my doc who wants to put me on an antidepressant.
He put me on Zoloft which I did not tolerate well at all. He likes me to put input into things, and I would like to have an idea of which antidepressant for my panic attacks would be. He of course would make the final descion, but he does ask my opinion.
Any expierences out there?

Zoloft is an SSRI. All SSRIs cause some problems in the first month of treatment. They include:

nausea
drowsiness
headache
changes in weight and appetite
changes in sexual behaviour
increased feelings of depression and anxiety
tremors
increased sweating

But they will disappear after 1 month. SSRIs work differently in people. It is not able to predict which one will suit you best. You may have to try different drugs before you stick on to one.

SSRIs are:

(Trade names in parentheses)

citalopram (Celexa, Cipramil, Emocal, Sepram)
escitalopram oxalate (Lexapro, Cipralex, Esertia)
fluoxetine (Prozac, Fontex, Seromex, Seronil, Sarafem, Fluctin (EUR))
fluvoxamine maleate (Luvox, Faverin)
paroxetine (Paxil, Seroxat, Aropax, Deroxat)
sertraline (Zoloft, Lustral, Serlain)

Paroxetine has more approved indications than others but Fluoxetine is the long acting one. If you are a male you must select one with a shorter halflife (paroxetine or fluvoxamine) because you will be able to take drug holidays if you develop a sexual dysfunction later. All SSRIs cause sexual dysfunction in men.

Bupropion (amfebutamone) (brand names Wellbutrin and Zyban) is a different type of antidepressant. It is safer than SSRIs and doesn't cause sexual side effects. Bupropion lowers seizure threshold but an extended release version of this drug is very safe. New studies show that Bupropion XL can be used for panic disorders.

Mirtazapine is also a safe drug without any sexual side effects that can be used for Panic Disorders. This drug may cause weight gain and it is sedative in low doses (a unique property of mirtazapine).

I have heard that Paxil is a good antidepressant for anxiety. I take Effexor and it works well for my depression/anxiety. I have friends who have had a good response to Buspar, it is primarily used to treat anxiety and not a narcotic; however, Buspar is not an antidepressant but can be taken with some antidepressants. Xanax is like Klonipin but is very effective for panic attacks. Xanax works really fast and can "catch" the panic attack when it is happening. Klonipin works slower. If I remember right, Xanax works fast and only stays in the body for about 4 hours as compared to Klonipin which works slower and stays in the body for about 12 hours. If you want these kinds of medications (xanax, klonipin) to really work when you are having a panic attack, then only take them when you feel one coming on. Don't just take them if you don't really need to as you will build up a tolerance. That happened to me and now I have nothing to take when I have a panic attack which really bites!

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

I take Lexapro daily and Xanax during situations that I know could provoke a panic attack. The Lexapro works great, but I have to have the Xanax for more difficult situations. If you are perscribed Xanax or something like it, be very careful because addiction is likely. Good luck!

My experience with doctors and drugs has not been good. So I may not be the one you want to hear from... then again I might be just the person you want to hear from. Depends on whether you want to get well or be drug dependent and miserable the rest of your life. You should get in touch with Dr. David Burns. He just finished a book on panic disorder. I read his book: "The Feeling Good Handbook" which CURED my depression when four doctors, six therapists, and at least 10 different drugs did nothing for me. You are welcome to read my story here:

I take one medication while others did not help for me. WebMD has support groups and professionals who can shed some light also. Good luck, Suzanne
