To contradict some of the other answers ...

XP Home and XP Pro are very similar.
Neither come with Excel, Word etc he's thinking of Office Pro.

Both Home and XP are based on the same code base.

Home will not allow logon to a local computer domain ( although it can be frigged )

Home is a cut down version of XP ( some features missing )

I would always use Pro rather than home, however my latest laptop came with XP Home and I haven't resorted to overwriting it with Pro, so it's not that bad.

Hope this helps

XP Home is based on Win98 and XP Pro is based on Windows 2000 Pro. Why not just wait a few months for Vista?
