that would put the fear of god in you, and yet every religion describes god as an all seeing, merciful, benevolent being? don't the two things contradict each other

Religious prescriptions are not supported by authorised force to implement adherence.
So fear is the obvious tool to be used to ensure loyalty to a religion. The contradiction is too subtle, and is missed with blind faith ! The merciful and benevolent is to be expected only when a person is faithful, or if he submits , if needed after a confession to past deeds !

i find it about as contradicting as a theist telling an atheist that he is going to hell. an atheist doesn't believe in such a place it doesn't exist to them, therefore the "threat" (as it is USUALLY used) is moot, and a bit ignorant on the part of the theist.
you'd think in that BIG 'ol bible their would be a more loving and sharing way to get your point across, but alas screaming profanity and "your going to hell" should be theists theme song.
i find all religious figure of speeches interesting.

Fear teache people to be cautious, and Love to cherish,When we become Christians we fear losing the relationship with God, we know what he has brought us from, and do NOT want to go back to that sad place, But the fear of GOD is the beginning of understanding, when we get saved, we have a new heart , one that has stronger love for mankind, we also understand more clearly, how God can love someone who sins, but hate the sins they do, Thats why Christians try so hard to convert sinners, to open their eyes to the truth, we have been there, we know how you feel, But if you have not been a child of God, you have not experianced what a child of God has experianced, ITS POWERFUL.

It seems that this god creature is so vain and vindictive that if you do not stroke it's ego by worshiping it in a highly proscribed manner, it tortures you for eternity in everlasting fire. Now that sounds like a highly disturbed creature that is hardly worthy of worship or respect.

not really think of the ones who do not believe along with the threat of one culture and society against another when discussing trade and procuring resources. trying to prove " My GOD is stronger and better than your GOD so do what I say or else I will put the fear of my GOD in you. "

No the bible says God is love, but He is also just. The word fear in the bible means revered. We should revere Him but also fear His wrath on judgement day if we are not washed in the blood of the Lamb.

no! Were you ever discipline by a parent for your own good? When his children do sin, we are disciplined.
Those that are his children will not go to hell.
The others do not want to be his children, and they make a choice to go to there. They would rather enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season and die lost.

Religious fear does not mean a trembling, but being in awe of; respecting. Same word, but different meaning.
