I am a 19 year old male who has had a skin tag maybe half the size of a pencil eraser in my armpit ever since I can remember. For all I know I was born with it.
A few days ago I bumped it or something and noticed that it felt kind of painful. I've had it forever and it never really bothered me before so i thought that this was kind of odd. It has been painful like this for a couple days now. It is not all that painful, just hurts a bit when I move it around. It feels like it only hurts on the stalk. I noticed that it has also changed in color. It always used to be just slightly darker than the skin around it, but it has gotten a very dark brown almost black. The stalk appears to be maybe a bit red and irritated looking.

I have read on the internet that these things rarely ever or actually do not become cancerous or anything, but I am still really worried. Is it possibly cancer? Should I go to the doctor or is it just getting ready to fall off?

I have read that sometimes the stalk gets twisted and a blood clot may form in the skin tag causing it to change color and get much darker. It said to see a doctor immediately if this happens. Is this possibly would is happening here and is this type of thing dangerous?

Skin tags are rarely dangerous, but you should definitely go see your doctor, just in case. My husband has some in the same place and any friction that is different than normal makes it painful and raw. It's a definite possibility that it's getting ready to fall off, but if not and you want it gone, a dermatologist can remove it fairly easily. Definitely consult your MD.

ANY change in a growth on the skin needs to be seen by an internist or a dermatologist IMMEDIATELY as the growth you may see could be deeper than you think. Better to be safe than sorry. Suzanne

There could be an underling condition that is causing them. My grand mother used to cut them off. I have them to but they are not noticeable ..... i would go have them looked at, i know that the doctor does something for them but i cant tell you what because i don't know. I have never had mine looked at ....
