If this letter came to you through the US Postal service then NO you cannot open it. Opening it is illegal. (FED LAW) If this letter was like hand delivered by a person and mistakenly dropped off at you door it is still illegal but I don't think it falls under Federal law. Either way opening it is not right. Just drop it off at this person house and let her know that it was mistakenly dropped off at your house. Doing this might even give her a change in attitude towards you.

I truly have this performed this too and in reality you've 3 thoughts! a million - seal the letter again up and positioned it in next door neighhour's letter container 2 - throw the letter away 3 - seal the letter again up and positioned it again in a submit container for the submit place of work to furnish again Its truly as a lot as you. you've performed no longer some thing incorrect, even with in case you would possibly want to sense a touch to blame about throwing the letter away it quite is what I did ! And definite I felt a touch to blame - I accidently opened next door monetary corporation actuality (we are interior a similar monetary corporation)

Yes it's against the LAW and everyone knows or should no that. But it is also morally offensive to invade someones privacy. Put yourself in her shoes and ask yourself how you would feel. You may not care for this person but always handle things the way you would want someone to handle your business. You'll sleep better at night.

It is a felony to open another's mail, or to deface it in any way. You can go to prision for 15 years for it. No kidding. Place it back into the box or give it to her directly telling this person you recieved it by mistake. Its not worth the heartache to be nosy.

No don't.
Recommendation: you can take the letter to her doorstep and knock and when she gets out tell her that you didi not steal it but it was delivered at your door. See what happens after that she will start accepting your greetings each morning or any time you meet. show her that you are not at war with her.
Good luck.

This has happen to me. If their right next door, I take it to them.
If it's on the next block, I put back in the mail. Unless you want some jail time, do not open another person's mail.

You already know that it is a FEDERAL CRIME to OPEN SOMEONE'S MAIL !!!
And, YES, she could pick up the phone and turn you in -- the FEDS aren't FUN-LOVING FOLKS, btw !!!!!!! THEY TAKE IT REAL SERIOUSLY -- NO MATTER how old YOU are !!!!!!!
PRINT on the outside of the envelope "DELIVERED TO WRONG ADDRESS" and drop it in any common mail box -- not your mail box! (Especially if you've already opened it, which I think you've done. In that case print "OPENED IN ERROR, PLEASE RE-DELIVER" & drop in any COMMOM strret side box -- the big Blue Ones in USA). And DONT EVER DO THIS AGAIN !!!!! You could go to JAIL & have to PAY B I G FINES !!!! Mail is sacred, so say our laws!!!!

I think you know the answer to this!
(Just in case you don't - no, it is illegal not to mention unethical)
Put it back in her letterbox - even better hand deliver it and tell her that it came into your post box and you thought you would do the right thing - then she may think differently of you and not give you "the looks" any more
