HI,

I've been to watch the "Big Apple" fall on New Year's Eve a few times. I always stayed further up from the madness at Times Square, maybe around 52-53rd street, on 7th Avenue, near the Sheraton. You can see the apple drop, and the crowd is still huge. The police cordon off the streets once they're sardine packed, so like between 51st and 52nd, one cordon, then 52nd and 53rd another, etc... they want the cross streets open for emergencies. The good thing about being up there, is once it's over, you can disperse a bit faster, just head uptown, maybe towards Amsterdam or Broadway. You probably should consider getting their around 9:00 pm or so. If you've got your heart set on Times Square, you need to be there like around noon-ish.

I envy you going. It was so awesome when the countdown started... imagine hundreds of thousands of people counting down as one. It gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

Have a great time and be wary of pick pockets.

i live in New York City and the best place to celebrate is anywhere with your friends and/or family whether it's times square or not.
the times square celebration is fun and something you should do at least once in your life, but it's really really crowded and you have to stay there at like 3PM for a good spot. and if it's cold, like it normally is, it's crazy.
you could get a hotel room near times square and have a party in there... that's what a lot of my friends and i did.

am a NY resident and i feel the best places to celebrate the New Year is either Times Square( 34th on Broadway) or at the Grand Central Terminal( 42nd on Lexington) or the Waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn

you could go to times square but you won't have a hope in hell of getting into a place afterwards. if you are not that bothered about the ball dropping, get into a good bar and watch it on tv. besides, it will be freezing outside and the crowds are horrible.

Do you thrive on being in massive crowds-if so, that's the place to be.
