I am a PhD student from Switzerland, curious and open mind. To go to USA is my dream since I am young! I do not have an hotel yet, so if you have good and cheap adresses, it is welcome (or if you have a little place at home...). If you just enjoy to meet and speak with new persons and if you are interested to give me a unforgettable memory of this trip, contact me!

I think you should look through your university, or affiliated universities in the US to link you to a network of people who can find you a place to stay. Asking randomly on the Internet could land you in a bad situation. Also, in general, New Yorkers are not ones to invite random people from the Internet into their homes. We are cynical, skeptical, and paranoid... because we have seen it all, all types of scams and so forth. I know to some it might seem like we are cold, rude, or hard on the outside, but we really are great caring people, it's just that we know how to survive and part of that is protecting ourselves.

Anyway, try those other options through your own school or through student groups, you should be able to find something. Good luck and have a good time here!

Many that asked similar questions went home in a body bag(dead) ! Be careful, else you may end up wishing you could forget the trip (if you survive it). Common sense is as essential as your tootbrush so pack accordingly. Use a computer search engine to look for lodging by typing in motels. They are cheaper than hotels and you can pick your price based on number of beds etc. As for a guide, check with your travel agency-many offer such a service. If anyone else answers and offers to put you up or to be your guide, don't agree to it. There are a lot of psychos out there and New York and other large Cities are where they are most common because of their large crowds. BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!

FIRST of all nobody will kill you in NYC. That is a common misconception.I will tell you though people are not friendly in manhattan,i know that from my own experiences. You will be fine but i encourage you to make a schedule for yourself that way you have a plan of what you will be doing. It also is extremely busy in manhattan. That streets are packed with people you will feel very overwhelmed and out of place, probably like your in a movie.People have negative views on cities but the only reason the rate of crimes is higher in cities is because there are so many people so it just sounds worse.NYC is a beautiful place with alot to do.Just know where you are going as it is extremly hard to get around, and easy to get lost. The streets are very confusing so know where you are going. You will have a great time, and you will be safe here.
