I am wondering if the women in Turkey, those who dont wear Muslim headscarf, are they Muslims? Do they practise Islam?

And additional question, how many percent of Turkish population are practising Islam? Or believe in Islam?

The answer is yes. The wearing of the headscarf was banned by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk back in the 1930's, he also banned the wearing of the Fez for men & turned Turkey intoa secular state by separating religion & government. He did this to Westernise & modernise Turkey. Today there is still some resistance by fanatical groups to 'keep the headscarf alive' so to speak. Generally in the east of Turkey & in the villages it is still worn, mostly by older women. My mother in law wears one out of choice, not because she has to. My father in law always tells her to take it off! The younger generation & people like me (foreigners), as a mark of respect at funerals or for going to mosque would wear one. Put it this way, you wouldn't get arrested for wearing one, and women are free to go without a headscarf whether they are practicing Islam or not. The percentage of Islam in Turkey is about 96%, the rest of the population is made up of Jewish & Christian religions. Hope this helps.

Officially 98% of the Turkish population is Muslim, but of course not all of them are practicing or believing Muslims. It is almost impossible to give a percentage on this.

But it is for certain that there are millions of Muslim women in Turkey who would not wear the headscarf but believe or practice their religion. They would choose to cover their head during prayers. Surprisingly, it is also possible to find women who don't practice or moreover are non-believers but still wear the headscarf.

Especially in some rural parts and some suburbs of the major cities women cover their heads just because of cultural practice, neighborhood pressure or habits.

Yes, they r muslims of corz. Islam doesnt depend on the headscarve, its about mind.

10% of the Turkish women wear headscrave and unfortunately our PM Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's wife represents only these 10%, not all the Turkish women. The other countries think that all the Turkish women are wearing headscarve becoz of her.

I believe that Türkiye is an European and the only moderate islamic country in the world.
