It's been said that a golf course has 18 holes because in Scotland, they used to have a shot of whiskey after every hole.

But, how much whiskey would that be? What has the official size of a shot back then?

This is a story from Scotland, hundreds of years ago. The unit of measurement for spirits at the time would have been a 'dram' (hence the word being used for a quick drink these days).

One dram (or 1/8floz) is approximately equal to 20.84ml.

The 18 holes would therefore have used up 375.12ml, roughly the size of a large hip flask or half-bottle.

One shot is about 1 1/2 ounces to 2 (depending on the barteder)
Times 18 equals somewhere between 27 and 36 ounces...so anywere between 3/4 to 1 liter.

No way you could survive one full shot per hole.

A true scot would never ask for a shot of whiskey. He would have a dram. This being equal to a quarter measure of a gill. However this was before the introduction of the metric measurements in scotland.

It is only fairly recently that spirits were measured so you are talking about a good hangover
