It is not a matter of principles, but health and safety. As you are at your workplace, you should be allowed to retain your footwear: what if nurses in hospitals or nursing homes were told by patienrs to take off their shoes?
This isnt a normal "family home", there could be hazards like broken glass, plus standing and walking barefoot on a hard floor can be tiring for you.
The family is a guest in your country and hostel, they should not dictate what you wear on your feet.

In the USA a company can be sued for discrimination by an employee if he /she is forced thru threat of being fired to do something that is a risk ,real or perceived,to the employees health and/or well being.Find out your rights in your country and then stick to your guns.Good luck...

Most Asians and some Muslims remove their shoes when entering a home/house.I'm not sure about people from other country's. If I were in the private home of the people that practice this then I would bow to their custom in their homes.

yeah, maybe at home, but in a hotel? Trust me, you don't want to do that, especially amid the circumstances. That's just illogical to take them off. For example, my friend works at a jewelry store at the mall and every day after work she would take her shoes off. And right now, she has horrendous foot fungus in the form of raspberry like clustered pox all over her feet. Puss comes out when she walks, and I bet she can hardly walk right now for that matter. So I'd say a big fat NO WAY! It's your feet and your problem, not there's, they're just messing with their health. I always heard from my parents never to do that in case of getting worms too. So like double the troubles there.

Perhaps you need to have the state come in and inspect the place...there are many jobs that require special shoes...one of the airlines will not let their employees wear open toed shoes. Even when a family member flies standby, they have to wear close toed shoes...

An alternative...thick soled fitted slippers...they would protect your feet from the 'stuff' that may get brought in.

Do the homeless also remove their shoes?

Look it up under the OSHA guidelines, I am pretty sure OSHA would require workers to wear shoes 1. Because if someone breaks a glass, you could cut your feet and sue the hotel.2. Some people spit and aren't too particular where it lands, "if someone has TB and they spit, you walk in it, you can get TB! if they try to force you to go barefoot contact OSHA!

I would refuse to remove my shoes based on health and safety issues. Contact your local Health Department and let them know of these orders from your employer.

Absolutely not! There is no way I would do it. As you mentioned there are health and safety reasons to wear shoes, not to mention it is an OSHA regulation. Maybe your head office needs some education on OSHA regs, safety, etc.

Good luck!

Talk to someone at your local board of health, and get a copy of the statute. This will save your job (and keep your shoes on)

why do you need to take them off?

If this is your buisness / job - then I would comply with health and safety regs - and just say to them you are unable to, as you might get shut down.

Can you not have 1 room where no shoes are allowed - take them off before you enter etc.. at least you are accomodating them
