I've heard that during the crusades people would rather die not confessing to the church than burn forever in hell. You'll have to remember that before the church people only knew God and didn't trust the church. I feel bad that the church would do that to people because they were the true Christians more so than the church.

You don't have to go to ancient sources, just go to WWII. Jews were not the only ones put in concentration camps. International Bible Students (now JWs) were imprisoned for their refusal to enter the military, or even work in military equipment plants. Such things are common in several countries in the last 100 years. Even in the last few years, like on Russia, where the Russian Orthodox Church is trying to stop the spread of other religions. South Africa also didn't care for the mixing of the races in JW Congregations.

They knew beyond a Shadow of a doubt that Jesus lived, was put to death on a cross, laid in a borrowed tomb for three days, then rose from death and the grave, walked the earth again and was seen by over 500 people, then He ascended into Heaven on a cloud.

You cannot deny something that you know is REALLY and TOTALLY TRUE. The conviction they had was encrusted in their heart and mind. Like you cannot change a leopard's skin, you cannot change this inborn characteristic that they had- Jesus is the Lord God Almighty, The Son of God, Our Redeemer, The King Of Kings!

Back in those days, it was easy to face death with a lot less fear because death was a common fact of life. No matter who you were, death was all around you. That was one of the factors that helped them maintain their courage. Another reason was the fact that when humans actually believe in something, it can bolster their courage in dramatic ways. They felt that if they died in this horrible way, then they cold expect paradise in the after life.
