It's just a greeting. On the order of "how are you," but basically just "hello," really. Even though it's in the form of a question, people don't necessarily expect an answer, any more than they do with "how are you."

It means 'what's happening in your life at the moment' or 'what things are you doing now'. It can also mean 'what's the matter?'. It's a more modern, casual greeting than 'How do you do?"

it is a slang form of the phrase "what's going on?" or "how are you doing"
it is commonly used as a casual greeting between two people
generally it is asking how each other are doing or what's been going on lately

It's another way to say "what's up"

I just usually say "not much" or "nothing", people usually don't really want to know.

Or you could do what my husband does and take it literally and say "the ceiling", "the sky"...etc....

it's just an opening question to greet a person for them to know how are you doing or what's new about you.. just to start a conversation...
