My dog prefers to go in the privacy of her own yard, too. Which makes me feel stupid walking along with the plastic bag to pick up her pooh and then never, ever needing it but I know in my heart of hearts that if I ever forget the bag then, with my luck, THAT will be the day she decides to take a dump on a neighbor's lawn.

I've owned dogs for most of my adult life and none of them have ever taken a dump on a sidewalk. People's yards, yes, that's why I'm meticulous about carrying the plastic bag to pick up the poo but never on the sidewalk.

I think they prefer to go on the grass. But each dog has it's own personality. Like my Bobo, a dog I had from 1984 to 1997, he prefered the most PUBLIC place on our route. Like I'd be walking him before the sun came up and he'd have to go right under the streetlight on the busiest street we walked. If I took him to the park, either right near the parking lot or whatever other spot had the most people. For him, I always had to carry at least one bag, usually two.

But I've had my current dog 2 years and the one time she went somewhere other than my own yard was because she had a sudden attack of the runs.

Um, lets see, why is this a bad thing? God, my dogs use to crap just about anywhere, and I think poop is the grossest just lying there all shriveled or fresh on a sidewalk or walkway. Anyways, dogs like to crap where there is a scent of something or of other dogs excrement, in a way to mark or remark their territory. Sidewalks obviously aren't porous and hold that much of a scent history if you know what I mean.

All dogs have different personalities and preferences. My dog won't go at all if he is on a leash. He has to be free to do his thing. My daughter's dog won't go if he can see you. He hides in the bushes or turns his back to you. My son's dog won't go if there is anyone outside in the yard with her. She waits for them to go back in the house.

Your dog has more sense than you. All collies are intelligent dogs she knows there is a time and place to do her business. So get with the program.

its because of heat and comfort. in the day time try holding a sensitive part of your own body close to the sidewalk or road it is pretty warm. Grass is soft and holds next to no heat. and if they need to drag they can without scraping thier bums on hot cement

My dogs won't either..It is too much like the surfaces in the house, where they know not to go..they will always choose grass or gravel..

Another consideration, is that if it is runny, it could run back and get their feet messy.
