Do you need story books? You may have items from your previous child but try getting some new items for your second baby so that when he grows he has something personal from his own childhood to hold on to. how about writing down a prepaid photo shoot for you to have the baby's picture done. This is turn will make a great gift for you to give back when you get the pictures back. Do you have clothes for every size your child will grow into in the near future? He is 3 mths now so maybe you can add size 3-6 or 6-9 month clothes to the list.If he has everything he needs now look to the future of what he may need.

I saw the suggestion for a gift card. That's a good idea, so you can get things for him later. My daughter was only 4 1/2 months at Christmas, so I was clueless too. I don't remember everything, but I got her a couple outfits, some cute bottles (I only had plain gerber ones, so for christmas I splurged and got her some character ones.) Also Gerber cereal bowls and spoons, cuz it's something for her, but I knew it would be something we'd be using soon, got her a nice pink blanket, didn't have any girlie ones yet. Also some baby music cd's. Like I said, I don't remember everything, but that's some idea. I had no clue what to tell other people either. They usually get clothes in a bigger size, oh, I remember her father picked up some bigger onesies for her. Just try to think of things that you know he may be using in the near future. Even if it's something small that you already have from your first child, it's still nice to get something newer for the second.

How about CDs of Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss and the classical masters? Your baby can listen to them while he sleeps. Scientific studies show the wondrous effects of such music to the development of the child's brain. You'll also find their music relaxing to you and your husband's ears as well.
I also suggest educational materials like soft books (books made of cloth), building blocks and kiddie puzzles, which he can also use in the future. The items don't have to be things that he can only use on his 6th month or as an infant.
Another suggestion may be gift certificates. That way, you'll have the freedom to choose which items you want to purchase.
Hope my suggestions helped!

Toys are not stupid. My baby absolutely loves his toys especially new ones. Surly you know that the baby's brain develops faster now than at any time in their life. Having a load of toys to occupy him for a while will keep him entertained instead of trashing your house.
I would go through a toy catalog and pick out some toys that will suit him for the next year. Don't forget he will be walking by next Christmas.

*Playsilks - these are good for playing peek a boo and things witha 6 month old, and can be used for hundreds of things as he grows
*Hand puppets/finger puppets - these will be fun for you to entertain him with, and as he grows he will get more and more use out of them
*books - always a good thing to have around
*Wooden teething rattles
*Kids music - ask for something good and not annoying
Ask for what you wish he would have, and get rid of your other stuff on craigslist or ebay or something. No use having things you don't want in your house!

I've been there. I have four kids and I tried to tell my family to not get my youngest daughter so many toys especially baby dolls...none of them listened and she got three last Christmas.
Try suggesting a gift card.

HEY HON,
FIRST OF ALL: TOYS ARE INEVITABLE! THERE ARE ALWAYS SOME RELATIVES THAT WILL TAKE MATTERS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS AND BUY TOYS (AT LEAST THAT'S THE WAY IT IS IN MY FAMILY!)
TRY BABY EINSTEIN PRODUCTS (BOTH MY BOYS, EVEN MY FOUR MONTH OLD LOVE THE VHS TAPES!)
LEAP FROG TOYS (THEY HAVE LEAP OR LILLY IN THE BABY DEPARTMENT ~ LILLY SINGS A SONG ABOUT COUNTING, LEAP SINGS THE ALPHABET. THEY ARE ADORABLE! WE HAVE LEAP AND EVEN MY FOUR MONTH OLD GIGGLES AND KICKS HIS FEET ENTHUSIASTICALLY WHEN HE HEARS LEAP SING!)
HOPE THIS HELPS!
