I agree with the others, that you should call the 1-800-suicide hotline. That is a place to start, and they can talk to you for a while if you need it (I think - I've never called it myself) and give you more information about resources in your area.
I just wanted to drop a note to say that I've been there, done that., and I know how you feel. I've been living with severe depression for 10 or so years now. It has been a real struggle. I want to let you know what it's like on the other side though - I know that you can't even imagine right now that it might be possible to feel happy or normal again, but it IS. The road is often long and rocky, but the destination does exist. I've been in therapy and tried many sorts of medications, and have found a combination that works rather well with my system and reallly helps the depression a lot. (Of course, it took 6 years to find this combination. Don't give up on medications if some don't work for you.) Couseling really helped me a lot, too. It got me through some tough times. Of course, now that I'm on good medications, that doesn't mean that I don't still go through periods of depression. For some people it is never "cured", but life can still be pleasant.
In regards to actually answering your question: you might see if you qualify for Medicare or some other similar health insurance. (Just an advance warning, though - government employees can be really bitchy and hard to work with.) There may even be resources in your area that are completely free for those who qualify. Finding those, if they're available, is something the hotline can help with. Oh and you might check with a university and see if they need anyone for their graduate psychology students to counsel for experience. Sometimes this can be free, or at a cheaper rate than you'd pay at a clinic.
Please don't give up hope on life. It can be better. Know this fact, keep it in the back of your mind (or the front), even if you can't believe it right now.
And, on a side note, I definitely know that some of the things people say to try to make you feel better can actually make you feel worse ... just try to ignore those people; they most likely haven't had any experience in the matter and don't really understand in the first place.
Redsoxer, did you notice the word "free" in the question? She most likely hasn't been able to go to a doctor. She's LOOKING for that sort of help, hence her asking this question in the first place.

Call a crisis hotline you may find one in the phone book or call an operator. There are free councelors standing by waiting to talk to people in most of the larger cities. Try one of the toll free numbers. Try to talk them into going to the emergency room for evaluation. They will probably give them some meds and set an appointment with a councelor to help them get thru this. Whoever this is must realise that it is a mental problem and they are not thinking clearly. They are loved and needed by friends and family.

I just did a Yahoo Search and 1-800-SUICIDE is the number for their hotline....Don't delay.....call it right away. You can also call any county hospital and ask to speak to their mental health dept.
Suicide is a panic decision...when you can't think of anything rational to do. It is ALWAYS the WRONG decision. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary situation.
SUPPOSE YOUR SHIP CAME IN AND YOU WEREN"T THERE TO GREET IT !!! Always think before you act.........SUICIDE is NEVER the right choice! 1-800-SUICIDE---or 911... Best wishes....people really do care!

Most countries have free phone line "lifeline". Many developed countries have free counselling.
Suicide is a very selfish act. It will not resolve many problems. It will bring grief, sadness & distractions to family & friends.

If you have a county hospital,,, they should have a psych ward- make them go. If you have to and they won't go,,, call the police. They'll take them somewhere safe.
