This too shall pass. Yep what goes in one end shall come out the other. Babies eat loads of things you wouldn't believe from time immemorial and she is comfortable and happy my guess it is passing through the digestive tract or upper colon. Kids have eaten coins etc and survived. I imagine sponge is easier to pass than a coin. Keep an eye on her and only if she shows signs of distress, take her to the hospital but I doubt very much she will. It happens, we do not have eyes in the backs of our heads, stop punishing yourself.

It will take about 24 - 48 hours to pass through her system keep an eye out in her poo for the sponge...

Kids eat the strangest things coins, legos, pebbles, a beetle and a superball come to mind as things my children ingested over the years...

Unless it's something sharp (glass, pins, even safety pins) or something poisonous.. If they were able to swallow it, it will generally pass through thier system on it's own... Just keep an eye out for it at the other end, if you don't see it within 2-3 days and the child is acting like they have a stomach ache or vomiting take them in to the Dr.

I think you ought to ask your doctor whether you should be concerned. While it is true that some things pass, I can imagine how there could be the chance that sponge may not pass the way something like a dime would.

If your doctor says you don't have to be concerned, great. It just seems worth asking. (You could also ask the poison control center, I think. They tend to specialize in stuff kids can swallow.)
