My father had tha problem and it can be very painful when it is not controlled. There are several things that trigger this: your diet, drugs, infections, stress, allergens, and genetics. When you are experiencing ulcerative colitis, if it is for the first time or a relapse you should ensure to drink plenty of fluids-in severe cases to improve absorption you might have to make a solution of salt and glucose in water. If it is that bad you realy should refer to a doctor. When inflamation occurs certain vitamins and minerals may be lost from your body. Supplements of multivitamins and iron tablets can help. High intake of fluids and food rich in magnesium and vitamin c lowers the risk of relapse. You should definately avoid fatty foods, reason being is that when inflamed the capacity to absorb fat is impaired which will lead to diarrhoea. Other things to avoid would be anything containing preservatives, a high intake of sugar/artificial sweeteners and excess spicy foods. You should replace these foods with carbohydrate and protein foods to prevent weight loss. Stool softeners may help. You can gradually introduce foods with high fiber once your symptoms are better. Once you are better you should avoid any type of alcoholic beverages, excess of fruit, or fruit juice, onions, and spicy foods. Which all could put you back into relapse. Try going to www.ulcerativecoliti.us/diet.htm you should get some good information from there. Best of luck.
