Brief history:
Well, this company that makes machines for copying things had some researchers/bored geeks that created this thing for computers called a GUI or graphical user interface. This is a system where instead of having to type in commands and things, a user can use a pointing device to manipulate a cursor over an icon on the computer screen. By clicking the icon one can start or run the program represented by the icon.
The company that originally made this was Xerox. The geeks that did it got together and showed it to their other geek friends. One of those friends was Bill Gates, another was that Wosniak guy of Apple fame. When the top big-wigs at Xerox told their geeks to get back to useful copy type work, the two aforementioned geeks that were shown what the Xerox guys had done thought the idea was pretty cool. So, Gates got together with another company called Intel who made chips. His original OS worked best with Intel processors. Wosniak and another guy went their own route and originally made all the hardware and OS needed for their GUI. Bill Gates had a better marketing strategy apparently. Apple ended up giving too much to schools and not focusing on getting into the corporate business market. By the time they realised this, Microsoft was already there and not going to be moved. Several years ago, Bill decided to be nice and give those Apple guys a (I think it was) $250million helping hand. Wasn't that generous of him? Oh yeah, he got lots of trivial things like huge chunks of Apple stock, but that was just a side effect of the "gift". [um yes that was sarcasm].
The rest, as they say, is commercial success history.
