Reformed says:
"Good question. In the end I guess the distinction is first "killing" and murder... Murder is never allowed. And then God's will or man's???"

This comment is precisely why I created this question. When any religious groups start finding loopholes in their religions that allow for killing people, there is a problem.

Religion should not be about resorting to obscure scriptural references to justify exceptions to rules like killing people.

Don't kill people.

"God's will" is no exception. No human could know God's will.

What's the difference between "murder" and "killing"?

If one defines murder constructively, one could assume that killing someone in defense of christianity is not murder.

Two thumbs down for loopholes.

Thou shall not kill, Actually means thou shall not murder. Plus we can smite thy enemy, we can defend ourselves. To kill for a religion would be murder.

Tough question!

Defense of Christianity cannot be defense of self or self-serving. Killing, not murder, was used to vanquish the enemies of God with God's blessing and assistance. These were clearly people who chose to turn against God and God's people. In the Old Testament, God was often prayed to and called on and often directed the actions of armies. I don't know the answer to this one. I know that in some instances, God saw justification for killing His enemies. Never, never was killing a choice of Israel for Israel's sake. God had sent them to the lands they were to war against and to obey, they had to fight for God, with God's help. Today, Christianity, I don't know. I suppose if God calls us clearly to go fight His enemies, I would assume it was right; but I would have to have clear instruction or a certain knowledge of His will to do it. I think today, the line between what is self-serving and what is God-serving is not as clearly drawn.

Good question. In the end I guess the distinction is first "killing" and murder... Murder is never allowed. And then God's will or man's???

No! It is NEVER justified to kill anyone for religious reasons. Not even from a religious point of view, I'd say, since religions claim to be about peace and love.

Jesus said to turn the other cheek. His humbleness and the way he was killed is a testament to Christians and the world to be peaceful and to respect all human life.

Sean, above, is quoting the Old Testament, which isn't Christianity, but Judaism.

No. There have been a few [normally governments etc] who have made up all kinds of excuses, but they normally take their 'understanding' from the old testiment.- It was ok for old testiment saints to kill in certain situations.- But no, Christians aren't ever allowed to do it.

Most of these christians answered no, but then they didn't think about all the wars that have been started over religeon. And the death of Jesus was because of religeon. They wanted him to take back what he said and he would not, they believed what they believed so they killed him.

No, if God is Love and he allowed man to kill Jesus, how can you kill someone for the sake of you believes? Especially when it contradicts your beliefs.First love God with all your heart mind and soul then Love your brother as yourself.

It never has been and never will be. And in instances such as the Crusades or, more recently, extremists gunning down abortionists "in the name of God," remember that just because someone claims to be a Christian doesn't mean that they are.

doogsdc,
Gee, I can't think of one reason. I could kill if I saw someone was being attacked unfairly and with excessive force, but not just because they were Christian. If I thought that they were being attack BECAUSE they were Christian, I would do the same thing, I hope.
