I have this same problem (my record is 7 days with no sleep) There are alot of things you can do. Mostly you should have a routine before you go to bed. Don't spend time in bed other than sleep. If you don't fall asleep in the first 20 min or so get up and do something for awhile and try again latter. My Dr couldn't give me a specific reason why some people have trouble, but you should definitely talk to your Dr ( there are medications that will make you sleep no matter what ;)

Hi, problem is you are too uptight. You lack peace reserves kids have. You need to change your thinking to be more childlike, which is actually a lot of fun. I know I used to not sleep for hours before I could fall asleep. Then I looked around for the best sleepers--kids--and figured out how to become like them and big changes happened. I now fall asleep in five minutes every nite. There is a lot to learning this I developed over years and am writing a book. Let me know if you are interested in learning more rosupplee@yaoo.com

Could be a plethora of reasons why you are not sleeping. Anxiety, nervousness, worry, etc. Ask yourself if there is anything bothering you to keep you up. If there is, then you'll know how to address it. If you can't think of anything, try writing down the things you need to do as they pop into your mind. A lot of people have thoughts in their head of what they should be doing the next day, and then dwell on the thoughts because they know they have a habit of forgetting in the morning. Jot down what needs to be taken care of and you might be counting zzzz's before you know it. If you still need a little help, then take some Tylenol PM. It helps take the "edge" off so you can rest.

You may suffer from tinitus, also called "ringing in the ears." Tinitus manifests in several forms, but mostly is a sound you hear which is not really there, a high pitched or low pitched tone, sometimes several tones together. It is distracting, which is maybe why you find trouble falling asleep. In my case, I hear a high pitched whine such as a jet engine. I find that a distracting background noise, the radio, a CD, mosic of some sort at a low volume helps me. Most people who have this do not realize this is what causes them to lose sleep. So, try it, playing a CD softly or the radio on a soft music station or maybe talk radio. Try them all, and maybe one will work for you.
On another note: meditation. Your mind may simply be active and that may be why you find trouble. If your mind is active, you will not fall asleep. Meditation relaxes your mind, eases your thoughts, slows your thinking, and maybe that will help. For me, I use a relaxation technique referred to as "zoned relaxation." When you go to bed, and clibm under the covers, first concentrate on how your body feels under the covers, the warmth, the pleasure in just being there under that blanket. Once you realized the comfort of being warm and under the covers, concentrate on the toes of one foot and just relax them, and then the other foot, just relax them and then move up your legs to your ankles and calves and just one by one, relax them. Concentrate on relaxing each part of your body as you work from your toes to the top of your scalp on the top of your head. It is your body to do with as you wll and your mind has a great amount of control. Slower is better than fast as you progess from your toes to your head. Take your time as you move from one part of your body to the next. Play the radio, so soft you can barely hear it, and then do the relax thing starting from your toes and slowly working upwards through you whole body..
It works for me. Maybe it will work for you...

There are so many reasons for this and if i were to put a finger on one, i'd hormonal problems and the most common would be caused by the thyroid
gland. Speaking from experience do the following simple test: raise you two hands horizontally and see if your two hands are twitching. If so, see your doctor.
Likewise, if you eat a lot, losing weight, easily get tired, always thirsty, go to the toilet several times a day, short tempered, then see the doctor, pee several times at night --- see your doctor.
if none of the above, then it's something else: tension, worries, love life, studies, peers, family, etc. But i would still recommend that you see a doctor.

This is a case of insomnia. For most people, the reason is because of stress. So, maybe you could try yoga, read a book (a boring book) :), and to not take naps during the day. Make it a habit to sleep in a scheduled time so that the body clock would adjust and say 'hey, time for bed.'

Stress can be a major part of sleep deprivation.
to the person who accused youm of being lazy, it's not all about physcial work.
The mental state has to be allright also.
If you're worrying about something, or recalling the bad day you had;
this is sure to make you anxious/worried/upset
and with this, your heart beat rises.
If you listen to music,
even if you like the hard stuff or electronica
this also makes your heat beat rise.
choose calming sounds...
if worst comes to worst you can always do something boring.
Do a math problem.
You will be yawning in no time =]

hope you get some shut-eye soon =]

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
