i depends on the color of your hair now if it black then leave the bottom black

If your hair is already a dark shade, then leave it natural if you want. Even if it's a light shade you can leave it as it is.
As for the area where you're putting the red, you should use a cool sectioning pattern like a triangle or a star shape. By doing this, the red colored parts will fall over your natural hair and create a cool look.
Red usually looks best with dark browns and black or if you want it to stand out a lot then with a light brown/blonde.

It would be cool and different if you had it red like you said then a stripe, horaztiall (sp), of platnium blonde then the rest of orange. but it all depends how long your hair is. I dye my hair alot, so i am running out of ideas my self.
