I wish I knew... I'm 28 and still deal with pretty much the same thing. The best I've been told is that I have a smaller than average bladder combined with a sound sleep pattern. Although it is pretty rare to still be doing this at 20, it's also a lot more common than you'd probably think.
As far as waking up and realizing it but not being able to do anything about it... the same thing happens to me too. Basically, what happens is that when you bladder starts to get full during the night, it sends a signal to your brain to wake up so that you can get up and use the bathroom. Depending on what stage of sleep you're at, though, it might take your brain 15-20 minutes to process the signal, during which time your bladder keeps filling up and has to try to hold on until your brain can get the message. Most adults can accomplish this without too much trouble -- their bladder can easily wait until their body is ready to wake up and then they get up and go -- but if your bladder can't wait as long as it should, or if you're unusually sound asleep and can't wake up as quickly as you should, then your bladder will reach a point where it just can't hold anymore, and you start peeing in your sleep. Starting to pee gives an added "jolt" to your system so your brain might suddenly recognize what's going on, but it still might take a few seconds for you to completely wake up, and by that time your bladder is probably mostly or totally empty. Even if you do manage to become fully awake while you're still peeing, it's just hard to stop peeing once you've started.
What to do about it is a hard question... the best advice I can give you is probably to make sure you're consistently getting a good night's sleep, so that your body is well rested -- this should give you a better chance of waking up quickly when your brain gets that signal from your bladder that you need to go, before it's too late. I usually only have a problem anymore when I'm really overtired or stressed out, and therefore sleep like a rock and don't notice I need to go until it's too late. There are also a couple of exercises you could try in order to strengthen your bladder muscles so that you'll have a better chance of holding on until you're able to get fully awake. Check out here:

I hope this helps... if you find anything that works I'd love to hear about it!!

Maybe it's an orgasm and you're having rainy goals? If it's pee, and it's leaking out for the duration of the night time, you most of the time have a bladder contamination. Your bladder isn't draining the entire manner empty, so it leaks as you sleep. Try consuming cranberry juice, however I might say you are going to have got to see a health practitioner.

This issue is not as uncommon as you may think. Have you spoke to a doctor about this? There are several other adults that have the same problem. Sometimes it is due to an over active bladder, and if not that then it could be something as simple as you being a deep sleeper. Have you had kids? I know lots of moms who have had this problem after giving birth. Either way--you should ask a doctor.

Your sphincter muscles could be weak. Try exercising them by contracting (like you are holding in your pee) and releasing 10 times, 3 times a day to start. Hold the contraction for as long as you can before doing the next one. The stronger you get the muscles, the tighter the sphincter will become when sleeping.

I would not be embarrassed about this but rather go see a urologist. You could have a weak bladder, a not fully developed bladder, or something simple as sleeping too deeply. Get it checked out though for there are meds that can help you and you will not have to worry about it.

This occurs in late developers, those who take sedation regularly, those who consume alcohol and in some as "Irritable bladder syndrome". Late developers can practise training at any age. Nocturnal incontinence of bladder is rare but a pad is good.

This is quite unusual but there is simple medical solution for this matter. Better to consult your familly doctor and he will direct you to a psychologist. You do not want to warry too much about this matter. After simple discussion and treatments you will come to end of the problem.

I dreamed I was at a urinal peeing and when I woke up I had peed on my buddy's couch. I got up in the middle of the night and walked home. The next day his sister laid her head in my pee. I was pretty embarrassed. I can't help you with your situation, just thought I'd share since you don't know me.
