In children, the most common spinal cord tumors are Ependymoma, which mostly males get and are pretty treatable,
and Astrocytoma, which is almost entirely a childhood cancer and has a much, much worse prognosis, usually death within a few years. These tumors grow from the inside out and need surgery, radiation, and steroids to keep the swelling down.
Most spinal cord cancers in adults though, are metastases from other primary cancers, usually breast or lung. They grow on the vertebrae itself and compress the spinal cord from the outside.
