Ouch, I'm a guy and the idea of that hurts me. That was in Indonesia but they also do it in Africa alot. It's based on some stupid idea that females aren't suppose to enjoy sex.

It's not based on religion, it's based on male dominance.

It's not scriptual but in Africa let me say (I did research on this) is they practiced this on young females so they can remain virgins. Some were even cut with broken bottles and some were cut in unhygienic places. When the female gets cut it becomes really painful for any man to penetrate and so she will avoid sex at all times and when she gets married that area will still be tight so it is/was a way for the husband to know that she's still a virgin.

Off course because most of them were cut in unhygienic places with unhygienic objects they are prone to infections and they die from this. Some because it is so painful even to relieve themselves they hold in their urines and they die of bladder infections and so on.

It's a terrible thing done to women, some have even died because of this. My heart goes out to them

Nope not just the the Islamic Religion
You have villages in Africa that practice this(and they are not Muslim)
Still goes back to being a Man's world and only the Man should experience pleasure in this.

Indeed it isn't. (EDIT: as far as Christian Scripture is concerned; the note on Islamic Scripture just followed later, and of that I have no precise knowledge of.)

As far as Middle Eastern traditions during ancient times are concerned, the most they did was to make a cut on the 'foreskin' (there is a precise medical term for the covering of skin that hides the clitoris, to which it escapes my mind at the moment) in order to permit the woman to slaughter animals for food (which was nominally man's work). As to when this was established, and as to how it could've degenerated into the practice that is so publicised today, that I have no knowledge of.

This topic gave me many a sleepless teary night. Sadly, after much inner debate, I can only conclude that the balance must be retained. If a sin deserves torture, and the one who commits the sin is not punished, another may take on the punishment. These brave children have taken on a punishment for a sin to which we have no concept.

No .Not Jewish or Christian teachings. But a Different religion Muslim were females are not supposed to enjoy sex. There are different forms of it from complete removal to only partial or just a ritual cleansing of the clitoris.
It is falling out of favor as well as male circumcision.

I had the same reaction when I read the article. Suicide bombings, riots over silly cartoons, female circumcision, no food during the day one month out of the year, Sunnis blowing up Shiites, Shiites blowing up Sunnis. Where do I sign up?

Our bodies were created with parts that serves specific purposes. None of these parts were meant to be cut out...otherwise God would not have given us these parts. Anyway, there are some freaks of nature that are occasionally born with extra on missing digits, organs that don't work, etc. I have no idea why these things happen.

Anthopologists argue that as a part of a cultural group, this phenomenon must play a role in preserving that particular culture somehow. As objective about things as I try to be, I personally think that any such culture can go ahead and die off.

Circumcision is obligatory (for every male and female)
by cutting off the piece of skin on the glans of the penis of the male,
but circumcision of the female is by cutting out the clitoris
(this is called HufaaD).
